Today in Tennessee football history..........

October 22, 1988......

After an 0-6 start and Duncan Stewart still on the billboard, the Vols traveled to Memphis to face the Tigers. Jeff Francis threw for 147 yrds and 2TDs and ran for a touchdown. Tony Thompson filled in when Reggie Cobb was injured and ran for 124 yrds and 2TDs. Keith DeLong had 12 tackles and an interception in the Vols 38-25 victory......Duncan Stewart finally got to come down.......

I was at that game. Good times...

October 23, 1965.......

Monday before game day, tragedy struck the UT family as 2 coaches died in a car crash (Bill Majors and Bob Jones) and a third died of his injuries on Friday (Charley Rash). With a heavy heart, the Vols played Houston at Neyland Stadium. The band played hymns instead of the traditional sprit songs and the Vols wore Black Crosses over the Block T.
After a scoreless first half, the Vols scored 17 points in the second as Doug Archibald returned an int 20 yrds for a touchdown and Walter Chadwick scored from the six to give a Vols a sentimental 17-8 victory.

Very interesting, great write up @peaygolf. I didn’t know the story behind the black crosses, only had seen pictures.

October 24, 1953......

After a 0-0 tie vs Alabama, the Vols hosted Johnny Unitas and Louisville. The Vols scored 9 touchdowns by 9 different players. Ray Martin intercepted a Unitas pass and returned it 100 yrds for a TD. Pat Shires, Jerry Hyde, Jimmy Wade, Bob Brengle, Pat Shires, Ted Schwanger, Terry Sweeney, Tommy Priest, and Bob Fry each scored the remaining 8 TDs. UT ran for 375 yrds and limited Unitas to 96 yrds passing in the 59-6 victory!

In Doug Dickey’s final year as UT Coach, the Vols traveled to Birmingham to face the Tide and a record crowd at Legion Field. Bobby Scott was named Southeast Offensive player of the week for his 2TDS, but the game will always be remembered as Steve Kiner’s day! The All American and SEC Defensive Player of the Year had 11 tackles and 3 Assists, 5 tackles for loss, an interception, a caused fumble, and 4 other QB pressures. His efforts earned him National Lineman of the Week by SI and the AP. Bobby Majors also returned a punt for a TD and Jackie Walker returned an interception for a touchdown in the Vols 41-14 victory!

Truly one of the great single-game performances of all time by an individual player in the history of Tennessee football.

My favorite memory of that game, however, was something that Kiner said as he came off the field in the 4th quarter. With Tennessee leading 34-0, yes, 34-0, Kiner sneered at his crimson-clad opponents and said, “Look at that old man [Bryant], he looks pathetic. There was a time when those crimson jerseys meant something.”

I met coach Fulmer once and asked him about that incident. And he said, “the strange thing is that Steve actually said that.”

Only time I have ever been an obnoxious winner. Everyone was giving me crap all week how they were finally going to beat us as I proudly wore Orange every day.

I did not let anyone forget who won. I got a lot of red bellys that night.

Very cool! Never heard that.

The 5OT game vs Bama was too easy....so I went old school again.

Andy Kosar scored and Jimmy Wade hit the end zone twice as the Vols made short work of the Wofford Terriers 50-0. Doug Atkins recovered a fumble and UT racked up 367 yrds rushing and 62 passing yrds.

Stanley Morgan ran for 117 yrds, caught a 65 yrd td, and scored late to cut the Clemson lead to one point. On the 2pt conversion, Condredge Holloway scrambled back to the 22 yrd line and lofted a pass to the end zone. Larry Seivers made a circus catch for the 29-28 victory. Holloway had 250 yrds of offense and was named AP and UPI Southeast player of the week.

I remember this like it was yesterday. Houston offered to cancel the game, but Tennessee decided it was best to go ahead and play the game. That year, Tennessee tied with Auburn and Alabama (Kenny Stabler threw away a pass on 4th down), lost to Ole Miss (Missed extra point), and finished with an 8-1-2 record, with a win in the rain over Tulsa in the Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston. It was also the year when Tennessee played UCLA in Memphis in the dedication game at the Liberty Bowl. Tennessee won that game 37-34. Tommy Prothro, UCLA's head coach, later said he was ashamed to be a southerner after complaining about calls from the officials (sound familiar?).

It was the start of a string of success Doug Dickey and Tennessee until he left for Florida in 1970.

Yes, this actually happened. Bryant was seen speaking with Kiner after the game, congratulating him on his performance.

Incidentally, this was the first segregated game at Legion Field. Tennessee had Lester McClain as a receiver, and Jackie Walker as linebacker. I am still not sure why history remembers So. Cal is the first integrated game played in 1970.

I believe it was because of Sam "Bam" Cunningham's performance that prompted Bryant to go to Admin and say, "It's time."

The Vols defeated #15 South Carolina 27-24 with Daniel Lincoln’s 27 yrd OT kick. The ‘Cocks outgained the Vols 501-317, but 4 turnovers were the difference. Erik Ainge threw for 216 yrds and a TD to Josh Briscoe. UT had led 21-0, but needed OT to come out on top.

I have attended a lot of special games in Neyland including Bama 82, Notre Dame 79, but this one, Clemson 74 ranks number one for me.

Tennessee traveled to Baton Rouge to face LSU. Down 17-14 late in the first half, Carl Pickens returned a kickoff 93 yrds for a touchdown. Chuck Webb ran for 132 yrds and scored 3TDs as the Vols defeated the Tigers 45-39.

The Vols traveled to Birmingham to play #11 Alabama. Alan Cockrell threw for 292 yrds and 3 TDs and rushed for 1 TD. His touchdown passes were 80, 80, and 57 yrds. With the game tied at 34 all with 3 minuets left, Johnnie Jones took a 3rd down pitch and raced 66 yards for the clinching score. The 41-34 Vols victory was the second in a row over the hated Tide.

Reaching deep into my bag of arcane trivia, on this date in 1955, our beloved big Orange shut out Alabama, 20-0. Future-Packers quarterback Bart Starr was a senior on that ’55 Alabama team, which finished the season with a perfect record (0-10), yes, 0-10. That Alabama team scored only 48 points all season, while surrendering 256, and was shut out four times, including three of their first four games. See Alabama Historical Scores.

Richmond Flowers scored from the one yrd line on the Vols first drive and Karl Kremser kicked an SEC record 54 yrd FG to give the Vols a 10-3 lead over Alabama. With one minute left, Bama scored and went for two, but the conversion failed. Bama recovered an onside kick and had a FG attempt to win. The kicked was blocked by Jimmy Weatherford, securing the Vols 10-9 victory. Weatherford was named Southern player of the week by the AP and UPI.

On this date in 1957, Tennessee shut out Alabama, 14-0, for the third consecutive year. The proverbial worm would soon begin to turn, however, for Bear Bryant answered “Mama’s” call and came home to coach the Crimson Tide in 1958.

October 29, 1938.......

LSU came to Knoxville with 3,000 students with them. The largest crowd ever (over 30,000) at Shields-Watkins Field watched the Vols defeat the Tigers 14-6. George Cafego and Leonard Coffman each scored TDs and the defense was spectacular as usual.
