Here's an article that will make Ras happy:

Mississippi, Washington cities sued over charges they maintain "debtors' prisons" | Fox News

The city of Biloxi, Mississippi is the latest municipality accused of running a "modern day debtors’ prison," in which poor people are forced to languish behind bars because they cannot pay court imposed fees and fines.

The American Civil Liberties Union is suing the city because it says Biloxi violated the constitutional rights of three individuals who were arrested without probable cause over unpaid fees and fines.

Earlier this month, the ACLU filed a similar lawsuit against Benton County, Washington, over its practice of jailing indigent people and making them toil on work crews to pay off their debts without taking into consideration their ability to pay them in the first place.

Obviously we need more information, but this doesn't pass the smell test up front. "No comment" from the police doesn't sound very good. Either the guy attacked an officer(which there seems to be little motivation for) or he didn't. Dragging their feet on even the very simplest statement looks bad, and they have to know that.

The cop was off duty in plain clothes and an unmarked car. The guy broken down had a gun and it appears that he may have thought the cop was up to no good when he stopped and walked up to the car.

I guess we'll never know for sure if the officer properly announced himself and his occupation before the speculated altercation started since one party is dead.

True, but I can certainly see how that could have very well played out..... Especially at 4 a.m. or whatever time it was.....

Valid point since the time of day would certainly come into play. But an alternative addition to your theory would be the unmarked car and a plain clothes officer easily being mistaken for a car jacker pretending to be an active LEO even if he did announce himself.

Sad situation and sad loss of life.

I know cops do wrong and it's exoited in the "media" world of today, but for the most part, I think most are tryi,g to do a job that is impossible at times. I have mixed emotions. There are good cops, bad cops, just like everyday people, but with the work force being a majority of ex veterans, I can't really blame them in most situations.

Going home to your family every night is priority number one and with that said, I can't imagine the stress and pressure these guys feel trying to do their job WHILE THEIR LIFE IS ON THE LINE sometimes.

They do wrong on occasion and I can't say I wouldn't do different. The job of a cop is one I wouldn't want...just saying..

You should consider it sounds like you're level headed.

An easy way to keep cops out of most of these confrontational situations is to reduce the number of "crimes" they have to enforce. Probably wouldn't have matterd in this case, but you save more cop lives if they aren't asked to do no knock raids on people that sell reefer or coke or try to arrest a man at his own home because he's a few child support payments behind...

Totally agree!

Maybe guys should support the kids they helped create and no one would show up at their house to arrest them.

Why is that the court's business? The decision was made between the 2 people that laid down to have the child. Why do you see the need for Big Govt to come in and be a 3rd Party in this arrangement?

Do you prefer the govt to have to feed and clothe these kids or do you prefer the kids to go without as kids?

That's the issue there are a lot of deadbeat dads that want.... What do you think should be done about that?

It takes 2 to tango. We call one of the irresponsible people deadbeats and threaten them with jail. Meanwhile, the other irresponsible parent has over 30 forms of contraception, has the power to choose who the father is going to to be, has the power to choose who lives or dies and is promised every form of state benefit imaginable with no threat of them losing their freedom.

Until you make the consequences for bad decision making equal for both parties involved, you will continue to see one group of parents incentivized to make poor choices in who they conceive children with.
