To Protect and to Serve...

I am a firm believer that when an officer is off-duty then he or she should be considered and treated as a regular citizen like the rest of us. This absolutely includes leaving the deparment's vehicle at the station, as someone with no authority to enforce the law (which at this point they wouldn't) shouldn't be driving around in a cop car.

I agree they should leave thw dept vehicle at the station. My neighbor is a cop. Parks his car in his driveway. I and anybody else with a brain cell know exactly when he is at home or at work. Not very safe imo.

If it was just an armed citizen would there be a difference?

Exactly... I'm not saying we should disarm them. I'm not downplaying what the guy did either. But once the police showed up he should have been treated like a citizen with a CCW.

I'll respectfully disagree to an extent. Being tasked as law enforcement means you aren't really ever "off the clock" in a manner of speaking. Some departments, depending on size of course, do authorize take home vehicles. And sometimes for good reasons since a smaller department may have to call out someone for an incident or response while off duty. And in the time it would take them to go to the station, get outfitted, get a vehicle and respond takes way longer than if they just hopped in and headed out. Just an example mind you.

But if we followed your standard, hypothetically, an off duty cop was to see a breaking and entering, they could do little more than watch it happen and call it in. Or say an officer was doing a routine traffic stop that got violent and he started getting his ass handed to him by a bunch of folks from that vehicle. Can a normal CCW holder stop that legally or do they have to sit back and watch? Of course the cop would be happy, but say it was a CCW holder. They aren't covered by anything from the perpetrators wanting to file a civil lawsuit in that case. And you know how lawsuit happy people are these days.

Now, I do agree that for minor violations of the law like traffic enforcement (greatly depending on type) off duty is off duty. But in many cases, off duty officers can and rightly should assist if needed. Just like if you came upon a medical situation where EMTs or the like were getting overwhelmed and jumped in to help, there is not a good reason for an off duty officer to turn their head and continue on their way if they saw a flagrant violation of a felony code. Or at least backed up the responding officer if the need arose.

Back in this thread, people were suggesting not to argue with the cops during a routine traffic stop. Here's a good reason why:

Video: SC man claims to be cop, tries to stop wife's arrest after pursuit

Watch the video and you'll see how playing the race card is now a huge part in even the most minor infractions.

Too many laws or too many criminals...

All this started because she was (allegedly) going 39 in a 25. Really?

At the end, was it really worth it for the cops or the drivers?

After thinking about it, I can understand how a cop could see going 39 in a 25 as being dangerous. If we have cops driving through neighborhoods at 40-45 mph in residential areas in order to run over suspects, they are obviously fully aware of the damage a Crown Victoria can do to life and limb. Running over suspects must be established police practice like emptying a magazine in order to neutralize a threat.

Indeed.

Cops have special powers in regards to driving, firearms, negotiating, etc.

It is amazing what they are allowed to get away with in the name of "safety."

There really wasn't any excuse for that.

Really. Maybe a few more hours on the range and more taxpayer money for bullets for these guys to practice with would be the answer... because obviously, the problem with cops nowadays is with their aim, not their ability to resist using lethal force.

I didn't expect universal dispproval of this incident. I expected someone to at least say that the dog shouldn't have run at the cops.

Its amazing that a black dog that was ALMOST shot in this instance gets more support than a black man that was shot in his back multiple times and killed.

If you're referring to the South Carolina incident than I think most people universally condemned it.

Not one person had anything positive to say about the cop that shot the guy in the back..... Not one. I know now why you hate women.... You're jealous
