To all the Milton haters or even those concerned

after only one game. Here’s some statistics for you to consider:

Tee Martin’s first start versus Syracuse in 1998

9/26 for 143 yards

Peyton Manning’s first start versus Washington State

7-14 for 79 yards.

At 1:29:05 in the video below, you can see Manning overthrow a deep pass, which is the same sin you are already giving up on Joe Milton III over.

I say all this not to suggest that Milton is the next Tee Martin or Peyton Manning but instead merely to suggest that the overreaction to a couple of overthrows by some in our fan base is a bit premature.

Milton will make life easier on himself if he ran the ball more after his first 2 options........with the way Georgia and Bama are playing defense, a true running QB may the only hope to keep SEC defenses honest.....if not, they are going to blitz every down.

Instead of calling them haters. Just call them whinners. They sound like most of the 30 to 40 years olds that I have work with. I just call them man babies.

Calling people "Milton haters" just because they pointed out his poor play against a terrible BG team is quite a leap. This team could definitely win 8 games this season with solid QB play, so it's frustrating to see Milton play poorly in what should have been a stat padding game. The bright spot was his play in the first quarter before he got locked in on trying to hit a deep shot, so I'm optimistic that Heupel can get him to play smarter for all four quarters against Pitt. I don't hate Milton and would love to see him play great, but we've all seen a physically talented QB struggle on the field game after game without any clear improvement and don't want to see that again. If Milton plays the same way against Pitt, then there's little doubt that it will be a loss. He's got to take a big step forward and there's no hate involved saying that.

Spot on. Hopefully we see some improvement, and a better performance on Saturday.

It's confounding that the same folks who whine that people are hyperbolically pointing out shortcomings of a player/position group, are the same ones who hyperbolically bleat and froth about forum members being "haters". Confounding indeed, but also pretty damn amusing.

Go Vols!

We went through this with JG. Hoping this next game is the game the lights come on. It never happenned. Going all the way back to JG's high school stats, thats who he was and always will be. It's going to be the same with Milton I'm afraid. Better than JG? Yep. But eventually we have to realize he is what his stats say he is. His ceiling is somewhat higher than JG at least, but more importantly, i think his floor and baseline is much greater than our previous qb.

Milton has been playing for years in college. Even with electroshock therapy his bad habits are not going to change.

Still, I hope he leads us to a victory.

Go VOLS!!!
He spent 2 seasons practicing in one offensive scheme. With COVID keeping Michigan from Spring Camp he had to learn a whole new offense with Fall Camp on the fly….sound familiar? He played part of the season last year with a thumb injury on his passing hand before getting benched.

The future is unclear whether he will begin dominating like Kirk Herbstreit and even Urban Meyer thought he would given his size, speed/power, and arm strength. I trust in Heupel though to give him some of the best coaching he will ever get and to break his bad habits.

Y’all gotta remember also…he is now on his 3rd OC/offensive system in 3 seasons. Sort of like JG. Only difference is I believe Milton ain’t scared on the field. He is so confident it is borderline arrogant. JG became rattled and fell apart for stretches of games in a row. Just saying it is refreshing to have a HC with killer instincts on offense…these players have to learn to mirror that identity.

Just think its foolhardy to read much into one game. Yes, Milton has some game starts elsewhere and his shortcoming in his first game at UT seem consistent with his prior noted shortcomings. Nonetheless, it was his first game in a different system without the benefit of spring practice. Just way too soon to tell if he can improve enough to be a consistent winner. I presume the coaches see him as having a higher upside than the other two QBs. Based just on his physicality, I can understand that.

I think the reality is the coaches are going to be experimenting a lot this year to find the right puzzle pieces at several positions. We should set our expectations accordingly, IMHO.

and this is why people it is hard to commit to tennessee I love tennessee football but if I had a son I wouldn't dare let him commit to tennessee right now with the way some of you react it's crazy bad mouthing young kids the way all do shame on ya'll. You don't think they don't get on here and looks at this stuff or know someone who does and tells them this crap. Look at the OTHER MESSAGE BOARDS what they are saying look at pitts there saying it's going to be a good say, we got a good team it's mostly all good things and all we got is neg crap to say we have the best and worst fan base in the country!
If I had another son who plays football, I would be extremely pleased to have him also commit to Tennessee. Your statement seems a bit far fetched if you are really a Tennessee fan

I had already thought about this, but what worries me is Milton is a Junior that has already played a lot of ball.

Pretty obvious to me that Milton is a poor quarterback. His throws are too hard, inaccurate, and with no arch on the ball. I would try him at tight end.

this statement above doesn't qualify as HATE - quit being soft to criticism as it comes with the position more than any other on the field of play!

this is a person's take on Milton's performance, which is somewhat accurate, and JM has much to improve upon but it was the first game of the season.

The TE part is pretty funny but probably not gonna happen.

lots of folks here, including yours truly, are desperate to see improved QB play so as to lift up the performance of those around them and see fundamentally sound football.

Go Vols !

Here's the simple math for the Joe Milton haters:

(a) Josh Heupel probably knows QBs, and how to pick the best of the options available, only like 10,000 times better than you (or me).
(b) Since he does, his pick is undoubtedly our beloved Vols' best chance at success.
(c) That doesn't imply Joe Milton is flawless. It doesn't imply he is Peytonesque. It only says he's our best shot.
(d) He's a college player wearing orange and white. We should support all players who wear orange and white. Even if we feel the need to criticize elements of their game, we still ought to be supporting them as OUR lads.
(e) Because we're all Vols fans. Right? Right? (I know you trolls are being really quiet about that one, shame on you).
(f) So we all want to win, Josh Heupel and all our players included, and Joe Milton gives us the best shot at that, based on the expert judgment of a national-title winning QB and now head coach.
(g) So no matter what happens next, we can only go into it hoping for the best, and supporting our lads.

It is no more complicated than that.

Do you have the right to bitch and moan and whine? Sure. You have the right. You look really stupid and childish doing it, given all the above, but you have the right.

Are you gonna get credit for having "called it" if we lose? No. Everyone is still gonna think you're a miserable sack of goat excrement, just for being negative about our lads.

So the logical approach, the most viable approach, is to support our coaching staff, support our lads (all of them), and hope for the best.

Try that.

Go Vols!
All the more reason to start Harrison Bailey!

One thing I don't want to see Milton do anymore is that pointing thing. From now on, he won't have time to wait for the receivers to run a second route if they aren't open on the first. I haven't seen the QB pointing and improvising like that since playing football in my back yard when the QB showed the players what to run with his fingers on his shirt before the play. (Those were the days.)

The Vols were 1-3 at the time the true freshman Peyton Manning started his first game in 1994 against the 14th ranked Cougers. The referenced over-thrown pass may have been a setup for the long reverse for a TD on the following play.

It was Tee Martin’s 3rd year when he started against Syracuse. Granted, Milton did have a few starts at Michigan, but maybe he was coached up well there. I think all of the hand wringing is a bit premature.

Bowling Green and Syracuse aren't equal. Syracuse was a pretty good team that year. Bowling Green was never a threat. Most people's concerns are that we're going to be facing a lot tougher opponents than Bowling Green and are skeptical if Milton will do well against them. Call it premature or whatever but it's not wrong to have concerns. This is a message board, meant for discussion. It doesn't matter what you think it is, the talking will still go on.

More excuses. The opponent was Bowling Green!! Shoulda scored 60 as did Auburn vs Akron. (Also a New Coaching Staff) Get back with us after Pitt.

I am blown away than anybody would suggest that we should have scored 60 points when every position on both sides of the line was up for grabs going into the season plus, we have a 100% new coaching staff.

Let’s all be tremendously grateful for a victory for come end of the year, it’s the Ws that count, not the points scored. Go Vols
