'18 TN OL/DL Cade Mays (Transfer)

Sure. But Kevin Mays is pretty connected into the program. He's a donor, and he knows the score. UT is missing some key pieces moving forward. The program has taken a big step back, and we're looking at a rebuild. The better the hire, the less rebuilding we'll have to do, but we're going to need several strong recruiting classes to replenish talent and depth. We're several years behind the UGAs and the Clemsons.

I agree in some respects to the roster but I don't think it's terrible. I don't think it's a major rebuild. This class and another should put us in a pretty good situation.

Ok, wtf is Currie doing? Why is he allowing this class to fall apart?

What would you recommend?
Let's say he fires Butch today. Would that have an immediate positive or negative impact on recruiting?

And, when is the earliest a coach could be in place? Sure, if you could announced Gruden tomorrow, I'd say go for it, but I don't see that happening. So. Otherwise you have to hire a sitting coach, and what decent coach is going to resign in the middle of the season and immediately take over at UT?

Please let us know.

I agree-- two years with an elite coach IF we can get him on board to haul in a good class this year. But that's not all that enticing to top recruits who can go to a program and compete for championships next year. UT has a tendency to wait too long and let the program dip too far before making a proactive change.

Meanwhile, John Currie fiddles...

We had a two game streak on UGA. Now they're this insurmountable monster! If we didn't have more talent than them, did we OUTCOACH them? That's the actual talent gap. A class or two.

What good is firing the guy that they committed to n the first place? You can't sign and place a new coach until seasons end. What's to gain?

Why do they commit to the coach? The coach can always come and go but the School will always be there!

:thud:

Soon! He will come back if JG is the new coach!

I thought butch should have been shown the door last year. Not because of how the season went but because of how hard he tried to get out. If someone doesn't want to be somewhere, they're not going to do a great job. What are your thoughts on Gruden?

I screwed up the post. I meant I don't think it's terrible, just to clarify. I think GA is more talented but coaching has an ton to do with it. We've lost to much less talented teams this year. Our players just haven't been put in a position to win.

So if we make a huge hire he would not reconsider? If it's Gruden? If it's another Butch Jones roll of the dice type hire I doubt we keep many of the recruits.

If we lose the next 2, we'll be out of bowl contention. That may prompt a move prior to Vandy to get a jump on hiring the next coach. But Currie may be thinking that we stand the best chance of beating Vandy by holding onto Butch for another week. Who knows.

The next coach will only make a difference to Cade if he truly believes that the new guy can turn it around and have us competing for a title in 2-3 years. Only top coaches can do that.

Putting my AD hat on, I would let butch coach at Missouri. Win or lose make it public that he's resigning. Start the "official" search. Announce it shortly thereafter.

I considered it, but with my luck, Saban would just retire. Not sure who I'd begin following if I left the Vols. TCU plays entertaining football. Like Stanfords smash mouth, hard nosed style. Interesting notion.

If Tennessee doesn't get a great coach this hire I'm through! Been a die hard fan since 85.After watching the past 10 years,I just think the administration just doesn't give a **** about winning!I was born in Hollywood,FL which is right next to Miami. I guess that'll be my next team. We'll see who the next hire is.Will be very telling as to the administrations desire to have a good football team.

Yes. He wants to sign during the early signing period and enroll early at the school of his choice. I'm sure the other programs are explaining to him the challenge Tennessee will have hiring a new HC coach, hiring a new OC, and hiring a new OL coach; prior to the early signing period...around 45 days away. He obviously loves Tennessee, but my guess is that he and his family are looking at his recruitment as a business decision now. He has some of the top college football coaches in his ear now, probably telling him that he can't afford to wait around while Tennessee figures out what it's going to do to revitalize the program.

I wonder if there's Any way we can get some of those coaches to speak to and cue John Currie, because Cade seems to be more alert than Currie at the moment.

Not shocked. Good decision by Mays imo. Hopefully he goes to a school that has a good coaching staff that will develop him into an NFL player.
