Gilbert’s most recent camp was the National Invitational Scholarship Camp in July of 2022. He scored 25 out of 36 points on field goals and 110.4 points on kick-offs. Gilbert graded out at the five-star level. Gilbert had a strong showing at the 2021 Kohl's National Scholarship Camp. He was able to chart 22 points in the field goal charting at camp and looked dominant on kickoffs. One of the stronger legs in his class, he scored a three round average of 108.08 on kickoffs at the event. Gilbert competed at multiple Kohl's ranking camps in the winter of 2021. His field goals were some of the cleanest we saw this winter and he showed great accuracy with 10 points made. Gilbert competed at the Kohl’s National Scholarship Camp in July of 2020. He scored 24 points during the charting phases of field goals and had one of the strongest legs on kick-offs in the 2023 class.

Yes you do..Ala learned that yrs ago..if one gets hurt you're screwed

You get 85 scholarships. Kickers and punters often come from the walk-on ranks. They won’t keep two on scholarship. That would be stupid, unless the backup is an eventual starter with more eligibility remaining than the starter. But given how close in eligibility they would be, this tells me they’re not confident in Carver.

Like currently?

McGrath got a Covid year. Otherwise, Carver would be the guy this season. It makes sense if you have a freshman waiting in the wings to take over for a senior. That’s an investment. It doesn’t make sense if you have a guy who will never be the starter on scholarship.

Who knows if this kid has a full offer? With NIL it should theoretically be easier to get specialists without using a scholly. But we're gonna need one regardless of whether he counts toward the 85.

Maybe he can punt a little too. All I'm saying is pursuit of a kicker isn't necessarily indicative of their feelings toward Carver.

Fair points.

I have no recollection of Carver being on scholarship. He was just a preferred walk-on. I can't find anything that says he was put on scholarship either, but maybe I missed something.

When McGrath leaves, we would still just have one on scholarship if we get this kid. Plus he's in state, so an NIL for tuition isn't out of the question I guess.

There’s such thing as competition. Carver should be the clear starter next year and this kid redshirts. Depending on how well that goes, best man wins following offseason. Whomever loses transfers. All of this contingent on this kid even signing, but it doesn’t bloat a roster to carry two. McGrath AND Carver both count against the 85 and nary an apocalypse hath occurred.

It’s a PWO

I think he’s on scholarship. What do you need to recall? They all sign a NLI.

Edit: I’m wrong. He’s a PWO.

Heupel took over a situation with less than 60 players on scholarship. This (2 scholarship kickers) works now because he has the available scholarships. When we get to the point of having a full roster (using all or almost all of the 85), we won’t have the luxury of 2 scholarships for kickers or punters. Hell, I’ve made my thoughts known about the stupidity of using initial counters for long snappers, which was a fad for a minute. Thank God that trend seems to have passed and Heupel isn’t into it. We were wasting scholarships and initial counters on guys who didn’t even snap on both kicks and punts (Lovingood) and guys who didn’t even start at all because when they did, it was a disaster (Albright).

Use the PWO program for the kicking game. It’s always worked in the past.

In the past, we have done pretty well with walking and converting the to scholarship after they have proven their worth. Now other schools are offering scholarships to the best punters and kicker’s coming out of high school. This may force our hand to do the same in the future.
