'26 TN ATH Joel Wyatt

Since he cancelled his first commitment date, I’m assuming he’ll announce another. Hopefully we don’t have to wait too long for him

Edit: oh next Friday nvmd

I think rev sharing has leveled the money piece of things more this cycle. Definitely outliers like Texas Tech offering way more than market value for some guys but it seems like old school recruiting is more in effect this year than they last few where having long term relationships, a clear plan, and path the NFL are more important. Rouse felt like one where unless Texas offered something crazy late the money was going to be in the same ball park even if we might have been a bit less so it reverts back to the other stuff. For all the talk about Texas budget their class looks similar to ours to this point. I’m sure they will close strong and they have good recruiters on that staff but this idea that everything is always about money is misguided.
And hopefully this cools down the portal in years to come.

So are we still recruiting him as an EDGE?
We are open to him playing another position but we value monetarily the EDGE position the highest of all he’s considering…so he wants to say he’s a S only then that changes things on the financial side.

So he’s obviously trying to thread the needle of getting a big pay day while also getting to play position he wants.

Safety is where he will have the best opportunity to make an impact for us and make it to the league. We’re absolutely stacked at the Leo spot and he will need to gain 40 pounds before he can even get on the field. Whereas he could come in as a true freshman and make an impact as a safety or receiver. I say start him at spring ball at receiver to see how his hands have improved, and if he’s still fighting the ball midway through move him to defense. Leo is where he has the toughest road to the NFL though because he could easily never play a meaningful down for us at that position. He’s just looking at what gives him the best chance at making a career out of a game he loves and making an impact for the team. Also Safeties probably have the lowest market value on the defensive side besides LB and the Edge is the top paid on that side. So that’s just a silly statement

There was an article posted on twitter yesterday saying that one team was emerging for him. Anyone have access to what it said?

Joel Wyatt took official visits to Tennessee and Vanderbilt in June and had a commitment date of July 6 planned.

But the four-star athlete from Bell Buckle (Tenn.) Webb School decided to push back his pledge and now many other programs are getting involved in his recruitment.

Wyatt loves the Tennessee program. Many people close to him also like the Vols very much. His June visit to Knoxville went well and everybody loved it except for one hiccup: How Tennessee wants to use Wyatt in its defense.

Vanderbilt is still involved. North Carolina and Louisville are much more in the mix. According to a source, Oklahoma is “a player” to land Wyatt as well. Georgia is working on getting the four-star athlete on an official visit.

Since the Rivals Five-Star in late June, when Wyatt expressed again that he wanted to play defensive back, according to this source, the Vols coaches have reached out and said he could play there if he wanted.

Tennessee is still very much involved in Wyatt’s recruitment. He still sees Knoxville as a special place and playing for the Vols is something he and those close to him have wanted.

This is why it's much more complicated than the people think when they say "tell he can play wherever he wants."

You don't play a S the same thing you pay an EDGE. We are not going to pay the premium that goes with playing the EDGE position and then just play him at S. If he plays S then we have to pay him on the pay scale of a S. Seems like he is trying his best to have the best of both worlds.

Legs too skinny for edge. Gangly. He’d have to put on 30 lbs of just quads and glutes.
6’4 safety out there closing in on a ball would be fun to see if he’s got the hips and footwork for it.

no slight to coaches, sounds like theyve done all they can do. same for spyre. cant make a kid stop listening to other schools.

James Pearce, Josh Josephs, Darrell Taylor, and Byron Young all say hi. All of these guys came in under 210 lbs and turned out great at LEO.

Our Leo group is very deep, I think he could be here 2-3 years before getting any meaningful time. In this day and age he would probably not stay, if he wants safety, offer safety rates if others are willing to go crazy, so be it.

He needs to commit to Tennessee and figure it out naturally when he gets here. And in my unprofessional opinion, Tennessee knowing he probably won’t contribute til year 2 should give him a fall or spring to try his desired position and then settle in at edge if he doesn’t make progress where he wants to. IMO he’s still too raw an athlete to get fixated on any one position. Someone gonna take advantage of what they know about his recruitment and use it to sign him and probably leave him in a worse situation by year 2. Come here where your family, friends, hometown, and relationships are for you and in a position to help you and figure it out here.
