Time to replace John Currie

We were going to fire him last year, we sell out the stadium, fire him after Georgia fill up the stadium, fire him after South Carolina, no less not send an interim to Bama, fire him after Bama, no it’s the Kentucky game. Let’s face it indecisive leadership kills a program. Just keep going to the game and you get what you deserve.

Rumors, rumors.

If all that is true our University leadership really is stupid beyond help.

If true, they are really dumb. It doesn't surprise me though. Our University has been dumb for a long time. We haven't been smart since Dickey. I hate it beyond imagination that we have people in positions of authority that are simply idiots. If this is true, then fans really do need to boycott it all.

I have one contact who works within the UT AD; we were best friends growing up and I still talk to him once or twice a week. I wouldn’t say he is real high up in the AD but it’s not like he’s at the bottom of the totem pole either. I always try to get information out of him but he usually won’t give me much, usually just saying he’s not really privy to all the inside info. But I spoke to him earlier today, and as a big UT fan, he’s obviously real upset about what is going on. He finally opened up to me a little bit, and he said the talk within the department is that Currie really doesn’t want to replace any major coaches, such as football and men’s / women’s basketball, in his first year. Also, apparently the Chancellor and President are believed to have put some pressure on Currie to keep things the same for now, as they feel the athletic department has finally turned a corner financially, and they don’t want to spend a bunch of money on a buyout right now. He said the boosters definitely are putting pressure in the other direction, but he states the boosters really don’t have as much influence this time around, at least not as much as a lot of people think...he said it’s more important what the Chancellor and President want to do. Plus he said our new Chancellor feels like our boosters have had too much influence on the AD in the past. And then there is also the problem of trying to get the boosters on the same page in terms of a replacement. He thinks that if a move is made, it won’t be until after the season. And if Butch makes a bowl game, the administration will definitely try to keep him. Plus he said we will likely make a bowl at 5-7 due to our improved APR and how well the fans travel. He said if attendance really falls off, that might change their minds. He wanted to emphasize that this is just what he had heard within the AD and as of now, should just be considered rumors...none of this came from Currie himself. He did add, however, that he personally thinks we will end up going 4-8 and a change will have to be made. But if we somehow make a bowl, he said not to be surprised if they just try to sell this as one down year due to new quarterbacks and a lot of injuries.

He also told me he has heard nothing of a players meeting and Butch isn’t being fired anytime soon.

Skeeter and Hubbs both have confirmed that Currie is resisting pressure from the boosters to fire Butch for weeks.

My God..
This is the most depressing post in the history of Volnation.

Step 1: Fire John Currie
Step 2: Fire Butch Jones

I am honestly more angry at John Currie's inaction than I am Butch Jones incompetence. Butch Jones has no choice. He's simply terrible at his job. John Currie has a choice. And he's making the wrong one. Butch Jones should have been fired after Georgia. The fact he's still employed is an embarrassment to this program's rich tradition and history.

John Currie please resign because you are an embarrassment to Tennessee football for what you have allowed to happen the last 5 weeks.

Verrry sad, and probably very true.

Based on Currie's quotes (e.g. 'florida and tennesse are 2 teams trying to find a way to improve / my father was a surgeon > surgeon's creed > operating can cause more problems' / butch and I are getting to know each other / improvement / I was inspired that so many fans showed up to support the players at Homecoming') -- I do truly believe that Currie was only prepared to support Butch Jones in 2017 (he surely thought 8-4 was attainable + bowl + Neyland improvement plans would get him thru his first year and into year 2 with Butch = Yr 6 with Butch). Now, Currie and Butch together are losing recruits and somehow next year's offensive line and defense are going to improve under this Staff (or more rounds of Staff turnover under Butch '018).

Tennessee appears to have a captainless ship. Time will tell. If in fact Currie hasn’t been actively preparing for the next coach, then he should be removed from his job. That’ would be pure negligence on Curries part and completely unacceptable.

I know Davenport and Currie were going to be trouble. The only way to get their attention is to cut off the money. Many wont wake up to this.

6 months people.

If say see who the next guy is before you grab that pitchfork or light your torch..

Great, yet another thread trying to evaluate the job performance of a job for which you will never qualify.

Watching the game last night was not enjoyable and there is no reason to believe that the remaining games will be any better. However, sometimes you have to suffer. And before I get the suffering tears, I was a fan well before the NC.

Firing Butch now gets us nothing if we do not have a replacement coach in place. You can reference Florida for more details. Firing Butch now may make you feel better by thinking something is being done or that your contributions to VN are finally being recognized, but little more.

The focus should be on the future of the program rather than the current coach's employment status or your emotional needs. Butch may very well be fired before the sun sets today. However, that means nothing if if that is the only action being taken.

So, let's take a look at who is in charge. What do you know about Currie? In his first few months as AD, he has quietly replaced coaches, renewed contracts of good coaches, and re-established the Lady Vol brand. Again, that shows leadership, willingness for change, support of good coaching, and a respect for fans and tradition. He has done this without much fanfare.

I suspect that a considerable amount of work has been done to secure the best coach. There are many of those actions we should not and will not ever know about. The result of those actions may not produce the best available coach but I believe they will result in the best coach available to UT.

I share the frustration of more than just this season and understand the passion to return to football relevance. As important as this is to our program, let's not try to build a program by tearing down those that are making the efforts and decisions to raise it up again. At least let's wait until we see who the next coach will be.

For so many on VN, the two best days of a head coach's UT career is, like owning a boat, the day you get them and the day you get rid of them.

Everyone forgets the option that nobody on this message board is smart enough or informed enough to know anything that's going on.

Especially OP.

Quoted for (mostly) truth.

There are plenty of folks in VolNation who are smart enough. But none of us has anywhere near enough information to go off on a rant about what we imagine the AD might be doing now.

The OP is just blind rage, translated onto a computer chat board.

Bruh, anybody on here could do a better job than Butch at this point. I’m truly convinced.
