Thoughts on today

Defense was very porous. It was bad enough for me to believe that it was intentional, to setup Georgia and Alabama thinking we can’t cover the middle of the field. I think we will drop a Leo or linebacker and get a pick against UGA

Still see that same pattern with Banks. Their OC was just flat out better today. O looked better than expected.

Aguilar had some misses and was still better than Nico. Looked better as the game settled in. All of the RBs ran well. TEs played well.

Good to beat a decent opponent by more than the spread and still see things to work on.
💯 on Banks.

4 hours to play a 60 minute game seems a bit excessive.
Yeah but the rule changes shortened the games... right? I told supporters of that change at the time that the goal was NOT to shorten games. It was to have more commercials per minute played. Mission accomplished. Two minutes of football. Eight minutes of commercials.

We can’t really know too much after today. We truly don’t know how good we are or how good Syracuse is.

The offense did better than I thought they would. The defense did worse than I thought they would. Is this a great offense? Is this a bad defense? We won’t know until later in the season. I’ll never complain about a 19 point win over a middle of the road opponent.

This, 100%. Outside of the big four on our schedule, I think Syracuse is as good as any of them. They’re not elite, but our 7 other opponents I think would all have a 1 TD spread or less against Syracuse

This game today felt like many of the games in Heupels first and second year. Fast start, jump out to a lead, and then figure out away to hold on/pull away at the end. The scoreboard didnt reveal how close the game could have been in the 4th quarter. Still...glad to see we should be exciting on offense this year, especially if the WRs continue to get better. Hoping to goodness we can get Moi and Hobbs back and they stay healthy. I think the Robinson kid is gonna be good but he can't play every snap and hopefully he stays healthy too. I think the corners are solid, especially with McCoy out and Gibson didnt play most of the game. LBs have to be better. But a lot of that was Carter being out most of the game. DL is the most worrisome position for me right now.

They need to go harder on defensive injuries. Any defensive injury needs to be multiple possessions without that player or a timeout.
Looks like they're not going to throw flags on injury faking, it was clear when two Cuse guys went down and one got up. There may be fines but who cares about that.
You go down on Defense, you're out until next possession unless it happens after extra point/2pt as the offense drive is over at that point

Agree I think Heuple opened up the offense more with Joey in the 1st game than he did with Nico all of last season.
I agree, that really stood out to me more than anything, and the speed of the offense until we got a good lead, was more like it was with Hooker.

I noticed on the replay the player that went down looked to the sidelines and went down without being touched, and another almost did, until he seen his teamate already down. This was very obvious a fake injury.

8 win floor, potential 9 or even 10 if the interior defense can wake up. Coach Garner is going to get the DL doing wind sprints until they wake up from the offseason.

We had a lot of injuries and went to base zone in the second half

Decent performance today. I saw nothing that made me think much more highly or any less of the team’s prospects than I did yesterday. It was refreshing to see a well thrown deep ball, it has been years since we saw that against anyone with a pulse.
It’s more than just the deep ball. Nico also doesn’t make that play to Star Thomas in the red zone. He panics and either takes a sack or tries to run it in. The play may have been nullified by Perry getting too far up field, but that TD to Brazzell that was called back was good QB play too

Overall for a first game I thought we played well on both sides of the ball. On defense the ghosts of Spurrier rose from the grave and time and time again they had receivers wide open in the middle of the field for 15 or 20 yards. Need to get that cleaned up. On offense a few high throws, but more concerning were WR drops right in their hands. We have to clean that up.

It felt like just before the half somebody from ESPN/ABC got to the officials and told them to do whatever to keep it close. I don’t think we had a call after that go our way. Our receivers were being mauled and couldn’t get a PI and theirs were being looked at hard and got PIs.

We played better than I thought we would and aim excited for the rest of the season. We’ll only get better from here, GBO!

He did seem to have a cool head and know what to do when a play broke down or wasn’t there. Could have been a great day if he hadn’t been so consistently high on his throws, but he was good overall.
