Vols Takeaway

  • Fast Start: Jumping out 17-0 set the tone and the defense making plays and even scoring.
  • Explosive Offense: Staley’s 73-yard TD showed the Vols can hit the big play at any moment.
  • Defensive Swings: Carter’s sack, Hood’s scoop-and-score, and Telander’s INT all killed Syracuse momentum.
  • Closing Tough: Syracuse kept fighting with Willis, but Tennessee answered every push and never let it get within striking distance.

Bottom line: It wasn’t always pretty, but the Vols controlled the game start to finish. The defense delivered turnovers and scores, the offense spread the ball around, and Tennessee walks out with a comfortable Week 1 win, 45–26.

From my memory the defense stopped the run for the most part, They got some sacks caused a couple turnovers that led to at least 2 TD's ....BUT we'd get them 3rd and long and the secondary would give up a 20 pass for a 1st down. The offense played great, Rb'S bowling over folks. Looks like 2022 where our offense is going to have to win the games for us by running up the score

I don't know how much this game tells us other than we're better than Syracuse. They lost so much production from last year we won't know for a while if this was a "good win" or not.

Saying Joey is an upgrade is a little premature..again, we don't know what Cuse has....one of their DBs was 17 years old. I think he's an upgrade but I'll let you know for sure when he plays a few conference games. He definitely struggles throwing outside the hash marks.
We ran plays this year we would never call last year. Shows coach has more confidence in JA. He also appears to have the football “smarts” Nico never did. The high throws are definitely a concern.

I don’t care if it was Syracuse, Bama, or Knox catholic, I can already tell you we are t any worse at the QB position than last year. How much better is yet to be seen.

Still see that same pattern with Banks. Their OC was just flat out better today. O looked better than expected.

Aguilar had some misses and was still better than Nico. Looked better as the game settled in. All of the RBs ran well. TEs played well.

Good to beat a decent opponent by more than the spread and still see things to work on.

1. My thoughts are these Refs are blind, what's the point of replay review when you do what you want anyway
2. Rule needs to be player on Defense goes down with an injury, he's out until next possession.
3. Thomas is going to be that dude
4. JA experience shows. Get the ball down on those passes and we'll be rolling
5. WR need to catch some of those balls when they hit your hand, they won't all be prefect
6. Don't think we'll ever get over 4th and TN
7. CJH it's ok to call a time out when it's clear your Defense is confused. T/O don't carry over into the next half
8. Save running a true freshman until the 4th quarter and the game is put away, if they're able to look good during that time, then maybe give them more time earlier in up coming games
9. Refs needs to be reviewed and graded and given points, enough points and you're suspended a game or two.
10. No excuse for a lineman to every line up offsides.
11. 1-0 😎

QB: Joey is a significant upgrade from Nico. He may not have the upside and raw ability, but the feel for the game and his pocket presence is and his ability to throw at different velocities is light years ahead of Nico

RBs have a chance to be the best RB room in the conference

Receivers look better but have to clean up drops

OL was solid

The playcalling was also a little more balanced and less predictable m

The defense is a major concern though. Particularly the DL. Syracuse lost their entire OL and shouldn’t have been able to run it down our throats for most of the game. We have to get as healthy as possible and clean up our run fits by the time Georgia comes to town

Colton Hood and Jalen McMurray were very impressive today though and hopefully our secondary can help elevate our defense once we get McCoy back. Boo Carter on the other hand needs to do some deep reflection on what type of player he wants to be and what he wants to get out of the game of football. Two critical 4th downs got converted because of mistakes he made

All in all there were some promising things today both for now and the future, but also some big concerns

If you take out the QB sack yardage they averaged only 3.5 per carry (37 for 130).

If you keep those, it’s even worse. 2.3 ypc

That wasn’t a bad performance by our rushing defense

I would give the offense a solid B to B+. Got to work on accuracy throwing the ball to the sidelines.

Defense gets a D. Pass defense needs a lot of work. Must get better.

I think this is fair.

Overall a solid beat down of an inferior P4 foe. But a lot of room for improvement.

His passes got better as he settled down that the game went on. He and the receivers started getting on the same page as well.

You realize they averages like 2.3ypc or something like that. They didn't run it down our throats. They had 4 more rushes and almost 150yrds less than we did.

For the people saying we couldn’t get off the field on defense, they were 5/14 on 3rd down.

That would’ve ranked us 34th in the country last year in 3rd defense.

And with such a small sample size if they would’ve been 4/14 it would’ve been the 4th ranked overall defense last season on 3rd down

Understand but he hit the long ball, unlike Nico. But it’s one game

4th down was frustrating but I think the defense was kinda it's worst enemy at times with the turnovers 😂 TOP looked like 2021/2022

Yeah and 4th is normally a stat that skews closer to 50/50 because if the odd aren’t 50/50 or better most teams don’t go for it. Would’ve been right at 50% on 4th if not for the one absurd play where we miss the sack and he dumps it to the TE
