Thoughts on Casey Clausen...?

I knew Casey was a player when he had his helmet ripped off against Bama (I think) and he was still looking downfield for a receiver.

Loved Clausen. Chavis' inability to adjust on the fly cost him an SEC championship and a chance to play for NC.:banghead2:

The problem with Casey Clausen was that he was a douche bag. Good player, yes. Douche bag, also yes.

My thoughts exactly. I remember many arguments about him during those years, but he was definitley a great qb. Hopefully he now becomes a help in recruiting for us.

I hope he commits here... I hear he has a little brother named Jimmy that's supposed to be the next coming of Peyton Manning. Maybe he'll come if Casey does!!!

Any QB nicknamed "Iceman" tells you all you need to know. The epitome of cool under pressure. Was a true road warrior. Never understood the people who thought he was a douche. Oh well. Heckuva QB.

I didn't think that highly of him when he was playing. I didn't give him credit. Now that I look back at him he was a great QB. Could you imagine having him now?

Loved Casey clausen. My dad didnt like him and didnt like Ainge. He however was stoked about Crompton coming in as alot of us were. But my dad was one of the last to finally acknowledge that Jonathan just doesnt have IT. (IT... Being all it takes to be a qood QB) He just didnt like how Clausen and Ainge presented theirselves as West coast cocky fellas. i called it swagger. something tells me My pops isnt going to under appreciate Tyler Bray now that he has seen what an East coast country boy from the hills of NC can do! Casey is a legend. I loved when he said he could have beaten Georgia with 1 arm tied behind his back that year. i agree with him we almost won anyways with James Banks running all over the place clueless all day.

see I think that is the same bias many UT fans have. They want a southern QB to lead them and the west coast guys just rub them the wrong way. Not saying it's wrong but I believe that's why many feel that way

i don't think that's true at all. i never hear about people wanting a southern QB specifically. i think we want a QB that is a competitor and smart and has an arm. the whole southern preference is not accurate.

The biggest thing Casey had going against him was he was expected to be the next Peyton for us. He wasn't on Peyton's level obviously, but he was definately one of our better QBs over the ages. At the time he was here, I also felt we needed a better QB, but we were spoiled at the time. (I wouldn't say I thought he sucked, but I thought he was average to a little above average at the time, and I wanted the best.) Looking back at the QB play since Casey has left; I'd love to have a QB as good as Casey every year. He probably never got the credit he deserved from TN fans.

Good post, pretty much how I feel, somewhat cared for him at the time, but he was better than what we had in recent years.

Yep. Casey annoyed me during the bowl game against clemson. I remember one time in that game there was a penalty and/or call that he did not like and he went jawing off at the refs causing another penalty. I was angry with the dude after that, really not going to help us.

Casey and Ainge had big egos. They had attitudes and so does our new coach. I have always had problems with that type of person but maybe that's what we need to be successful these days. It sure gets attention. Even Cromp has a cocky attitude. Could you imagine how bad it would be if he was a successful QB?

well i think we have been so used to humbleness (if thats even a word) and timid play that when we have someone come in with confidence, and isnt afraid to show he is confident in his players and his team it is seen as cocky.

1.) He was a good QB who prospered with the talent around him. The talent made him better.

2.) One of those guys that his moxie carried him, making him a better college QB than an NFL QB. He didn't even make the chiefs squad.

3.) The longest pass record wasn't on him, if I remember correctly thats the one where the receiver had to stop, jump in the air, and grab the pass from behind the DB, then turned around and ran the entire field for the TD.

4.) There are 2 types of great QB's. Ones that just find a way to win, and ones who are just truly awe inspiring (Marino etc.). Clausen always found a way to win.

In my eyes, based on his skills as a QB, he probably would be on the line of top 5 QB's at UT. Based on his record and determination, he deserves to be a top 5 QB at UT. Depends on how you look at it.

At the same time you have to know when to be cocky and when to shut up. That's what annoys me about Crompton, last year at the Florida game, he ran for a first down jumped up and slapped the Florida guy's head talking smack and going on late in the 4th quarter....look at the score dude.

oh i completely agree with you about crompton. If i was him, i would be taking all online classes. Crompton talking smack, was like a frenchman man talkin smack, its like dude really? I was more refering to CLK's confidence

the comment "not another west coast/CA QB" has been made numerous times on VN. It's usually made by those who believe Casey wasn't a good qb at UT

People will say I'm nuts...but based solely on performance in college and not in solely comparing stats, Casey Clausen is a very close second to Peyton among UT quarterbacks in the last 20 years (remember, college only!). And if he'd have pulled it out against LSU in Atlanta, I might even move him up to first!

I know, a bit late. But I was having this argument earlier and I was wondering what everyone else thought as well...
I personally love Casey, always have. I mean come on, he led the band at the swamp! How can you not love the guy?!?!

He is actually who I tried to play like during football games, and I always made sure I was number 7 as well lol.
Of course everytime someone asked if my number was because of Vick when they heared my reply it was like they were hit by a rock.

Casey had it all, flash, confidence, clutch, heck he even had some wheels if the time was right.
As stated previously, you don't get called Iceman for nothing :D.

Love your screen name. My sons name is Dalton. Wife's maiden name.

He never got the respect he deserved, from some fans, me included. He was a great quarterback.
