Thoughts on a potentially new offense?

Acting like scheme and playcalling don’t matter is silly. That Ohio State team eviscerated us in the playoff because of their elite talent, yes, but they also lost to a terrible Michigan team prior to that because of “X’s and O’s.”

There is no level of talent that poor coaching can’t screw up, and there’s no level of scheme and playcalling that can make up for major skill deficiencies. In other words, the Jimmies and Joes don’t mean sh1t without the X’s and O’s, and vice versa. You. Need. Both.
Who said they don't matter? I said that we have the X's and O's in a reasonable position to win. We are getting flat out whooped by better players. Alabama didn't drive us into the ground like tent states for over a decade from X's and O's. They dominated us with better players. As you already observed, OHST did the same thing. And OHST lost yet again to MICH for the same reason we lose to inferior FL teams.

What happened against Arkansas, then?

According to reports out of practice today the offense worked out of mostly condensed pistol sets. Oklahomas offense this past year used a variety of different formations and motions and the offense Landry Jones ran under Heupel at Oklahoma was vastly different than what we run now and was almost like a blueprint for a lot of the offenses we’re seeing in the NFL. I think this will allow us to plug and play a lot of new comers a lot easier as well as develop players better for the NFL which will improve recruiting. I also think not relying so much on space and pace to move the ball will allow Nico to slow down pre snap and make the correct reads. I’m excited to see what the offense looks like in the spring game
Oklahoma’s offense this past year was Exlax

they needed a revamp.....badly

honestly you could sit on your couch and damn near call the plays they were about to run it was so predictable.

for example, 2nd down no matter the distance was always gonna be the most vanilla run play you've ever seen in your life.

I'm not good with Xs and Os, but I look forward to seeing what wrinkles Heupel adds to the offense. Opposing defenses seemed to do a better job at times in minimizing the big plays. And while our passing game seemed to be predicated on getting the ball out wide, Nico is very good at throwing down the seam and in the middle.

Yeah and I watched Miami shut it completely down in the 2002 National Championship.

Not to mention cutt blocks aren’t allowed anymore.

Details matter.
I think the triple option example was used as a figurative generalization. The service academies and Ga-tech (semi recently) have frequently had winning seasons while defeating teams with vastly superior talent.

I don't think it was meant as an absolute. Losing in the NC game to one of the best CFB defenses of all time doesn't mean your offense doesn't work.

It seems like defenses have caught up with his offensive scheme. I hope he continues to evolve. Last season, he began slowing the tempo down when needed, so I am hopeful.

I like the idea of utilizing the pistol in our run game. You have a 5’10” running back lined up behind a 6’7” Quarterback and a line of guys that are all 6’4”+ 300 lbs + . He’s gonna be hard for the linebackers and safeties to find when you’re pulling guards and running a lot of counters and traps like we like to do.

The coaching staff had the entire Winter to realize their offense was in need of some changes. I just hope the changes we see in he Spring are included in the offensive scheme this Fall. I think we will see improvement in the offense this Fall. Some of it should be the changes in Xs and Os.

Easy answer. We don't have the Jimmy's and Joe's to prevent a mediocre team from having a good day and pulling off the win. The elite players can power through a game and offset bad play calling. We don't have that. We play a little bad. They play a little good. Give them the home field advantage. Stir it in a pot and you have last years ARK game and most of our loses against Florida over the last 10 years +.

The point is that offense is equal parts scheme and execution and a lot of times it’s just talent.
I am more concerned about getting the Jimmys and Joes on offense. We know itthe offense works when we have the players. We also need for the coaches to call the right plays instead of calling the same 6 plays in the same order.

No.
Just because you all don’t understand what’s RIGHT in front of you doesn’t mean that our talent was the problem.

We had:
-6’5” 205 lbs WR than ran 4.3 flat (NFL COMBINE)
-Dylan Sampson
- A QB that runs 4.4 and can make every throw
- Solid TEs
- White and McCoy have had success.
And scored 35 points combined against Arkansas and Oklahoma???

Why are we even arguing this? There’s a reason Heupel is revamping the offense. What are we even talk about?

And it’s right in front of your face.
The damn defense coaches from other teams even voiced it! Kirk Herbrtited illustrated it against Ohio State as he pointed out THERE WAS NOWHERE TO THROW THE FOOTBALL.

Alex Goesh and Heupel worked well because Alex had an imagination and took that load off Heupel. Halzle has the imagination of a Chinese car’s salesman. The offense has been an absolute strain with him with the keys.

This is why you bring in Seth Litrell because he has proven at other places to have success. Guys were hurt the whole damn year at OU with a crappy Jackson Arnold at QB and a freshman QB- not a fair shake, and you can see the innovation in his Offense at North Texas.

It’s the wrong answer too.

Our offense was predictable.
Simple as that. Not sure why you all are arguing against it.

I mean you do realize Nico has said “new offense” this spring?

No doubt about it. Between Nico struggling on deep shots and the lack of separation at WR, something was definitely up with the passing game last year. The dirty little secret is that the offense isn't very complicated mainly because it can't be when we're trying to play so fast. I have a feeling we see more measured tempo and a little bit more intricate route tree.

Why do you have that feeling? I hope you are correct.

It's the same offense that we ran in 2022 and 2023 with much more success in the air. The only thing new about last year is that the passing game was so weak that we turned into a running team. Helen Keller could see that. Why? Because we don't have the Jimmy's and the Joe's. Pretty sure Alcoa could have got a sack against us last year.

Y'all are dumb if you think it's going to be a whole new system. There is nothing inherently wrong with the offense. It's that weren't utilizing every facet of the offense.
