Thoughts on a potentially new offense?

Maybe not running the same 12 plays over and over could have some benefits...he'll either evolve or it'll be the reason he's fired in 3 yrs
The offense was simplistic and repeatitive. It was frustrating to watch sometimes. Thank god for Dylan Sampson i'll say that. Oh and Tim Banks and Rodney Garner too..

Interesting comment yesterday from Donte Stallworth at Pro Day which relates to this discussion. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we started seeing some variety in the WR routes and just the offensive approach in general. If we want to compete with the Ohio States and Alabama's for elite WR's, we need to be able to sell them on preparing them for the next level.

Winning games is the bottom line, so I'm sure the thrust of any scheme changes will be with that primarily in mind, but bringing in elite talent is a huge part of winning. My feeling is that Josh knew the offense was limited, and couldn't really make any changes last season due to Nico's inexperience, or the OL, or the limitations at WR, or a combination of all of them. So he rode Sampson and the run game as far as it could take us. I'd be surprised if we didn't see some significant changes in 2025.

I wanted to show everyone that I can run pro style routes,” Thornton said. “Every teams main talking point was asking with the offense we run at Tennessee, could I run those pro style routes. I think I showed that today. I had to be very intentional in preparing for that. Playing two seasons here, we don’t have the wide route tree that most pro style offenses have.

Expanding the offense is a good thing. When opposing coaches state that they can predict the plays we are going to call, something has to be done. This is a step in the right direction. Slowing down the offense can also allow the offense to shift at the line of scrimmage after the QB reads the defense and attack their weak spots. Should be fun.

I would love to see more pre-snap motion. We really seemed to have gotten away from that the past few years. I can think of 3 different plays off the top of my head from 2022 where we put a player in motion to manipulate the defense and they went for a score each time. I think part of the reason for the drop off has been the lack of production from the slot receiver. We need to try and get him matched up on safeties.

Spend less time worrying about the X's and O's and more on the jimmy's and the joe's. I wanna see someone blocking in pass protection. Can we build a wall in front of Nico? Who can move the pile when we run? I want to know who in the secondary is going to be out "shut it down" guy? I want to know who isn't going to give up 3rd and 20?

I'm fine with Tennessee doing whatever, but the 2021 and 2022 offenses (ranked #7 and #1, respectively) were beautiful and impossible not to love. Wide splits, presnap motion, create mismatches, read the defense, and if he's even I'm leavin'. And a whole lot of running in between. I get that some people think it's been solved, but that didn't make it any less beautiful to watch and cheer for. Watching those offenses was like being able to breathe after a decade of allergies. Every breath tasted sweet.

So. We'll see. If they become less explosive I can't say that I'd be thrilled. But we'll see.

I think until proven otherwise, this could be an alternate scheme, not a replacement. Seems it would be easier to employee backs and slot guys in the passing game, and could still be run with pace. Could use different groups but still not sub and keep the defenses in fast reaction or safe mode! Might be a better way to max out our TE room utilization.

I will sit back and watch a while. Can’t believe Coach is flushing the HH type schemes with Nico on hand and another guy on the 26’ hook.

Some change and variation would be good imo.
We need several more formations where we don't throw the RB screen.

Our offense is perfect to exploit it. Defenses have to commit early in the play against our RPO. I expect we'll RPO muc better this season with Nico maturing.

We had the Jimmys and the Joes last year offensively. The system we ran just made the passing game tough for a young QB

I can't agree. Our o line leaked like a sieve. Our Running back was a stud who put games on his back and carried the team. Same for our D line. Our secondary was improved from previous years but still barely SEC caliber. Our receivers were suspect and our QB didn't appear to have chemistry with the receivers. We padded our stats by bludgeoning no named teams. In games against real opponents, our stats looked a lot less impressive.
I won't argue that our play calling is getting stale. That's fixable and I think our coaches have everything between their ears to fix that. But they gotta have better talent on the field and the depth to support it. Our 1st string can play with anyone in the country outside of the top 5. Beyond our 1st string, there's a steep talent drop off.

Agree, the O was predictable last season due to the reasons stated. And as others have said you have to believe Hype is working on this. Bringing in the new analyst I believe is part of that process.

I would love for us to implement that uptempo Option style offense that SMU runs.

I’m all for a potentially new offense. Whatever offense we tried to run in 2023-2024 didn’t seem to work very well with limited creativity and adjustments.
Hmmmm interesting. How many games did we win combined in the 2023 and 2024 seasons? We only won like 13 games right?

My two "musts" for an offense are:
* Positive yards on first down
* First downs, not touchdowns

So, I don't give a dang how the coach accomplishes these two musts of mine, but if we gain positive yardage on first down, we don't put the pressure on our young offense to gain 10+ yards in two downs vs three downs, especially deep in our opponent territory, which is always hard to do. And if we focus on getting first downs, the touchdowns will naturally come plus, our defense will be rested and ready to defend against some mighty good offenses in our league. Go Vols!

Acting like scheme and playcalling don’t matter is silly. That Ohio State team eviscerated us in the playoff because of their elite talent, yes, but they also lost to a terrible Michigan team prior to that because of “X’s and O’s.”

There is no level of talent that poor coaching can’t screw up, and there’s no level of scheme and playcalling that can make up for major skill deficiencies. In other words, the Jimmies and Joes don’t mean sh1t without the X’s and O’s, and vice versa. You. Need. Both.
