This job just became untouchable by anyone who VN would approve of

Wrong, wrong, wrong. What VN just did is add a huge premium to what a coach would regularly deserve. If Marshall would go to Alabama for $2.5, he'd require $3.0M to come to a place that is verifiably nuts. And because of that, we will have to overpay for our next coach.

Additionally, the purse strings are not entirely in Hart's control. MBB is just one of 16 things Hart has to fund, and if you pay 3M for an MBB coach, you hurt the golden goose (football). It's like any other business - you budget for your expenses. The budget UT has for an MBB coach probably tops out in the 2.6-2.8 range unless very special circumstances kick in. If you really think the AD is just a bottomless fountain of money and Hart can spend whatever he wants, you probably also have huge balances on your personal credit cards and get late notices for your utility bills. The AD is a zero sum game, and if you overpay for MBB you hurt football recruiting, which ain't gonna happen.

You "open the checkbook" people make me giggle. Was your degree from Pellisippi that lame?

Speaking of "verifiably nuts"

How you doing?

Yes, we would. Because he's going to look at 2.6 or 2.7 M here and think about where else he could go for that kind of money, and realize that if he waits a little longer, he can go to an NC State or Oklahoma State for that kind of money. There's a risk premium he'd put on this place now, and it prices us out of the market for a top 25er like Marshall.

So if we fired him....we were doomed.

He leaves on his own....we're doomed.

Anybody else wondering why the fate of our program is tied to ONE AVERAGE COACH? :eek:hmy:

The coaching fraternity is tight, and viewed CCM as a success here. Much as happened three years ago, all of them will be warning each other not to leave anything remotely secure to take this job.

The next coach will have to come here from an equally or more desperate situation and probably will be someone without much [if any] name recognition.

VN has created an unwinnable situation for its own athletic director in the search process, and we can only dream of hiring someone who would make us a true contender now. Stability is the backbone of major college sports, and by shafting the coaching fraternity's prom queen, we have just ensured a date with a very homely and desperate replacement.

It won't be Hart's fault when his first 8 choices say no. Check the mirror.

:clapping::salute::clapping::salute:

you tell him, doc!

Nah, just kidding. Your rant is nuts.

I just don't understand the whole "we can't get a decent coach" premise. What decent coach wouldn't want to come to this place??? I mean this league is a joke, beat 2 maybe three teams a year and you are in the tourney. Facilities are second to none, and a fan base that LOVES hoops (ask CBP). Attendance in the top 5 in the nation every year. This place has everything you need to be a legend, all a coach has to do is recruit and win. I think a coach would be crazy not to want to come here.

I agree 100%.

After Kentucky and Florida, this is easily the best job in the SEC

It's only untouchable to coaches that don't think they could get a 4-7 seed with the talent we had this year. For the record, I don't want any of them.

Tennessee wasn't forced into hiring anyone; they picked the best of the dregs given financial and reputation constraints. Also, I'm so glad to know that the talent at Tennessee last season was expected to win 2 games. In retrospect, it'd be silly for me not to be elated about a 5-win season!

I literally don't have the time...

Go Vols!

Please just stop this crap. I don't care how close the coaches supposedly are, if the money is their they'll come.

Also if all the other coaches saw him as a success then maybe they need to re-evaluate their definition of success. The guy toiled for three years, and finally in his third year when he had veteran talent, he backed his way into the NCAAT and got lucky when Duke got beat.

This job is not untouchable, it's been shown before that if you win, people will come and support. Hell they still supported this year even when we played like crap. They can and should go after every proven coach they can and make them say no.

If this was true, Martin would still be here, wouldn't he?

Money isn't everything, coaches would like some stability, security, and respect, too, just like employees in any company in every vocation in this country.

Go out and pay to make the right hire. You'll come off better than hiring a hope and a prayer and paying the buyout 4 years down the road.

It's a better job than Florida. They just have a better coach and a better athletic director. The job itself isn't better.

Don't be ridiculous. The state of Florida is turning into as much of a basketball recruiting hotbed as it did with football.

UT basketball is behind UK, UF, and UAr.

And UF's basketball pedigree now dwarf's UT's...

National Championships - - - - 0 - 2
National Championship Games - 0 - 3
Final Fours - - - - - - - - - - - 0 - 5

Totally agree. They are good because Billy D is there and for no other reason. There gym stinks and there fan base could care less about hoops. Tennessee is the second best job in the SEC, right behind Kenlucky. Just need a coach that embraces this place and wins. Talk about a sleeping giant... I mean we get 12k for freaking WOMENS games! Get a proven winner and you won't be able to get a ticket for a men's game.
