This fan base is just embarrassing

how bad was the mess? I think people overstate the mess because of how little Dooley has done to fix it. He inherited a team with more talent than what Franklin had at Vanderbilt last year. He had two years with those players before he lost to Kentucky.

And yes... Franklin beat Kentucky, but he lost to Tennessee and had a much easier schedule. Did Franklin outperform Dooley? I think not.

And by the way, Franklin is already making the "I need more time" excuse this year.

The mess was so bad that they took a big step back in year 2 of Dooley.

Also, NCAA probation. Very high attrition. No depth in key positions. Well under the scholarship limit.

I think that each of these things is better than it was when he took over.

well, yeah it's gotten better because probation is a time based thing. it runs out. and if you can just keep players from up and leaving en masse, then you're going to make up for depth losses over time. That said, Dooley's consistent record of finishing near the bottom of SEC recruiting year after year doesn't make the future look very bright. Majors, Fulmer, and Kiffin were doing miles better. It seems like the longer we have Dooley, the more entrenched we'll be, talent-wise, in the second tier of the SEC. That's my main worry with keeping him. Where are the exciting, big-time playmaking sophomores and freshmen? I don't see them on this team.

Anytime a Vandy coach takes his team to a bowl game while Tennessee stays at home, he is out performing the TN coach. It doesn't take a NASA Director to understand that.

Just wait until we lay an egg in Starkville.

I agree. At Vandy, putting together lots of moral victories is good enough. Just getting to bowl games consistently probably beats expectations there.

Franklin is at Vanderbilt. He doesn't even have an AD. The two programs shouldn't be comparable. And yet, if not for a one handed Da'Rick Rogers grab in the endzone on 4th and goal, UT would have lost to them. At home.

I only compared the two programs to say that, no matter what "Attrition", Dooley definitely had more talent than Vanderbilt and he's getting similar results. That should not be confused with me saying that similar results to the likes of Vanderbilt is even remotely acceptable. Have you seen UT's facilities? Their budget?

And yet, Tennessee was one play away from beating LSU. One play away from beating UNC.

Tennessee was better than Vandy that year. We beat them head-to-head. We had a tougher schedule. Didn't they play Elon that year?

-Georgia message boards are literally hoping we will fire Dooley, saying he is creating a dynasty here and will be a force to be reckoned with. And our fans are showing how stupid they are by wanting to stop the progress, fire the coach, and start over.

-All year our QB has been hearing "he doesn't care, he doesn't care about this program, he's a punk". Go watch his interview last night. He was torn up over this loss. He played his heart out and fought until the last minute. And our fans are STILL trashing him! Wtf???? Are y'all serious???

-"We haven't beat a ranked team, we have a losing record in conference, we can't beat our rivals". Why are we ignoring the facts just for the sake of crying? The SEC has 5 teams in the Top 10 right now. Guess how many of them are on our schedule..... FOUR. Let me say that again...... FOUR. It was the same thing last year.

-Speaking of "how bad Dooley sucked last year"...... did we forget about having to resort to our 3rd string QB? Did we forget about losing our best receiver? Did we forget about Poole playing hurt all year? Did we forget about having to move our best corner to safety where he probably doesn't belong? Did we forget losing our best safety before the season started?

-The SEC is the best it's ever been. Our rivals are the best they've ever been. We are in the middle of a 5 year (realistically) rebuilding job and we showed a DRAMATIC step in the right direction by going toe to toe with the #5 team on their own turf.

We planted a flag and demanded our respect last night. The world isn't laughing at UT right now. The world is laughing at its fan base. You crybaby's are embarrassing and bring nothing to the past and future glory of this program. I honestly thought I would finally see us all rally together after what we saw last night when I got on this board this morning. All I saw was more crying and irrational talk. It's straight up humiliating that I proudly say I am a fan of one of the greatest programs in football history, and I get to be associated with this level of crybaby little girls.

Flame away but I'm just keeping it real.

Best post I have read in a long time.

Vandy also lost to Cincinnati in the Liberty Bowl last year, while Tennessee beat them rather convincingly at Neyland.

Tennessee was better, but not by any sort of wide margin.

Because my point is that an elite coach took a long time to begin to turn the ship around at SC. My point had nothing to do with Duke... I thought that maybe you read what you wanted to... rather than what I posted.

Not to fuel the fire...well ok I guess I am.

Spurrier isn't a good comparison because prior to SC, Spurrier has already proven himself as an elite coach. He won an ACC Championship at Duke (pre-FSU, but still, it's Duke) and won an NC and ruled the SEC in the 90s with Florida, who before he got there had an average (being kind) history.

SC also had a really crappy football history. They didn't win their first bowl game until 1994.

I can't speak for the majority of fans from any fan base, but I can say that I work with, rub elbows with, and know MANY other die hard SEC grads, lifelong fans and some of the most homerific people you will ever meet. I am the lone UT grad/fan in the group. The honest assessment from them is that Dooley inherited a crap situation, with a crap fan base, and is doing a stellar job. All have expressed concern that when he gets the ball rolling a little more that he will have UT being an SEC east force. Not only that, but they have all said that Dooley is one of the classiest coaches in the SEC. I agree with them on all fronts, especially how truly terrible our fan base is.

I can also tell you that of my peer-group of UT grads (we were all there in the 97-02 time frame) everyone is a full supporter of Dooley. None of us know if he is the coach to take us to the next level, but we all understand how bad it was just a few years ago, and that he has shown some marked improvements. Long term improvement doesn't always show itself as W or L's in the short term.

You must work in a mental facility.

I'm out... thanks for all the civil discourse (to some of you). I'm usually a quiet reader, and I take comfort in knowing that the people complaining most adamantly are typically the minority. I'm pretty sure that this is the case here.

I don't know what will happen to Dooley, but I know that the UTAD will make a decision with far more information and thought than any of the forum participants.

If Dooley stays, I am behind him because I want to see our team succeed, and I still believe that he had succeed. We have just used Saban as a prototype for the type of coach that starts slowly but builds meticulously.

If Dooley goes, I am behind the new coach.

yeah, I remind Bama fans all the time about it too. When they talk smack.. I just ask them if they were a fan back when they were under NCAA sanctions and they couldn't buy a bowl game....

Personally, I'm not sure that Dooley could coach himself out of a wet paper bag. I hope I'm wrong. But that being said, he's the head coach and he'll be in that position until Hart and/or the powers-that-be say otherwise. So I'll support him and the team and hope that he will succeed because anything that I say or do won't change things by one iota anyway. I'll curse him from time to time when he loses or screws the pooch, but I guess I'll refrain in the meanwhile from demanding he be fired (like it would make a hill of beans difference) or agonizing over who the next coach might be. Besides, life's way too short to worry over things, unless Hart calls me up and asks my opinion on how things are going.
