Thinking about taking a vacation to the south

Oski, Hillbilly and Papa hit the nail on the head. (I'm actually from coastal Georgia originally). If you are flying into Jacksonville, set up base camp somewhere on St. Simons/Sea Island. You would love the Cloister or the King and Prince. I've got a buddy that runs charters from Jekyll Island to Cumberland Island, and I will be happy to put you in touch.

One day is enough to spend in Savannah. Any more than that and you will be sorry you did it. St. Simons to Savannah will take you about an hour and fifteen minutes. When in Savannah hit Ft. Pulaski, and go to Elizabeth's on 37 for dinner for the absolute finest dining experience that Savannah has to offer. Just remember to take a dinner jacket.

If you are staying on St. Simons I can promise you that Tybee Island will simply be a waste of time.

Incidentally there is also a nice historical Ft on St. Simons called Fort Frederica. It is probably my favorite of all the history spots on the Georgia coast.

If you do go to Savannah, make the drive to Fort Pulsaki. It is in between Savannah and Tybee Island. Pretty cool place.

If you like history, then Charleston is the place for you. Lot's of Civil War stops. Also, when you talk of Old Southern Charm, this place embodies that scene. If you have kids, not as much fun, but for you and your wife, it would be very enjoyable! Wherever you go, have fun!

If you happen to fly into Jacksonville, dont forget to go by the Tim Tebow shrine in Ponte Vedra beach and pay your homage:) Seriously you cant go wrong with a visit there and maybe split your trip up with a drive to Savannah. They have some of the best micro-brew you will ever drink. If you go out in Jacksonville, hit up a place called Ragtime. It is close to the beach and has an excellent selection of micro-brew as well.

I recommend Bardstown.
short trip south of Louisville.
You get History and Whisky!
that's where "the old Kentucky Home" is.
they may still do an outdoor theater performance of
the Stephen Foster Story.
Corny? yes, but GF may like it.

King Street and the Market in Charleston are great. Charleston's history is also superb. Try visiting the Citadel as well. Isle of Palms and the Sea Biscuit for breakfast if it's still open.

I'd also possibly recommend, if you've got time, maybe flying into Raleigh and taking a car through the Outer Banks down to Charleston. That's a lot of driving though, don't know if you'd want to do it. That's an exact trip that my wife and I are making. Stops in Atlantic Beach and Wilmington, NC on our way to Charleston.

I can't imagine what would entertain me for 4 - 5 days in Louisville. That said, here's a few attractions within 2 hours.

Lexington is about 80 miles away - there are plenty of distilleries in the area. The Horse Park is worth a visit. Also, if you are going to Churchill you should go to Keeneland in Lexington. Not as famous but a truly magnificent and historic facility.

If you are a race fan, Indianapolis is about 100 miles north and the Indianapolis Speedway and Museum is pretty spectacular as well.

As you can see, my suggestions get you OUT of Louisville!

The Hilton Head/Charleston plan is a lot better than anything that could be done around Louisville. It isn't that Louisville utterly sucks, it's just that the Carolinas are that much better.

You could do the Kentucky Bourbon trail and the Louisville Slugger museum. That will take a day and an hour of your time.

On really should only do KY in April or October when the horses are running at Keeneland. (Aside from the Derby of course)

If you are doing the Charleston/Hilton Head thing i would swing by Myrtle Beach for at least one of those nights, esp if a decent band or preformer is at the Hard Rock..

While you are in Louisville, head down to Fort Knox and visit the Patton Museum and the gold depository. In fact, drive up bullion drive!

what we are looking for is some history / attractions and excuses to booze and relax. neither of us really golf. I love the ocean though, but that doesn't have to be a high priority.

Charleston is great for someone who enjoys history...
* Fort Sumter
* The Hunley
* Historic Homes and Churches
* Horse drawn carriage and walking tours
* Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens

It is not Charleston.
It is not Savannah.
It is not Hilton Head.
It is not.....you get the idea!
It is Louisville!

If you do go there anyway, Keeneland is.> Churchill.

For beaches, boozing and a little history you might want to reconsider the whole thing and go to Key West. The Summer heat usually drives out alot of the transients who tend to wind up there in the Winter months so it's a bit cleaner and there's a little more elbow room.

I have killed many a beer and pheasant there.

If I were you droski, I'd go to Hilton Head. It's an awesome place. I managed to go there with my fiancee and her roommate (who's parents owned two places there). I fished and drank the whole time so I can't tell you a lot about the places to go, but it was fun.

just be sure to ask the hotel operator if it is a homosexual hangout or not, even if the hotel isn't, if that lifestyle bothers you, stay away

savannah would be a nice trip, although i wouldn't stay there for more than 2-3 days. i've been there twice and they've both been nice little trips for the most part. i've never been to lousville, so i couldn't help you there.
