Edit: tl;dr mild rant warning. It makes me a little triggert that colleagues now using nothing but AL tellin me how great it is. When I get to the point that I can't teach without AL, I'll fookin retire.

A simple way to explain it to someone like this might be:
“AI is basically software trained on enormous amounts of data so it can recognize patterns, answer questions, generate text/images, and make predictions. It doesn’t ‘think’ like a human — it predicts what response is most likely based on what it learned.”
Or even more casually:
“Imagine autocomplete on your phone, but massively more advanced.”
You could also break modern AI into a few easy categories:
Chat AI → answers questions, writes text, summarizes things
Image AI → creates or edits pictures from descriptions
Recommendation AI → Netflix/YouTube/TikTok suggestions
Prediction AI → fraud detection, weather models, stock analysis, etc.
And the key concept:
AI learns patterns from huge datasets instead of being manually programmed for every single task.
The funny part is most people use AI every day already without realizing it.
