Things built, torn down and other projects.(Pictures)

Oh.. came up with a business name yesterday. Figured I might as well go all out lol.

Honeysuckle Hardwoods (Antique Lumber) is what we are starting with.

After we get our store front open and get back to buding furniture we will have a second business, Honeysuckle Designs. That will be our wood shop and retail outlet.

To me Honeysuckle is about as southern as it gets. Something we can all relate to. Who hasn't pulled honeysuckle blossoms and sucked the sweet nectar out of them? Used to do that all the time as a kid. Heck.. I still do it lol.

Me and my kids are like we're in a candy store when we find honeysuckle.

Ok.. got a lot done today. I bet I stripped at least 1500 board feet. It was a long long day. I have 3 more spots on the extrior walls, and then 2 more short interior walls to strip then I can start pulling the floors up. The floors are in 2 layers also. They have cheap pine tongue and groove over the hardwood 1x stuff.

The tongue and goove flooring isn't really worth anything so it will get yanked up in the most efficient way.

Once the floors are up then I can remove the 2x6 and 2x8 joists and pull the 2 story portion down. There are some really nice 6x6 and 8x6 oak beams I'm dying to get my hands in. There are a lot of them in this building.

I ran into a problem that I had never encountered before until today.

I had stripped the lower layer of vertical 1x stuff off the horizontal boards, which left the remaining vertical boards on the second story.

So you would think it would be just a matter of getting on a ladder and prying them off, right?

I spent over an hour on a ladder and removed a grand total of 7 boards. Those suckers did not want to come off. It's hard enough prying them off at ground level. Those oak boards do not want to turn loose of the nails. Balancing 12 feet off the ground on a ladder with a 10 pound pry bar over head wasn't cutting it. It would take me 2 days to get just the horizontal boards off at that rate.

So I stepped back and looked the situation over.

I ended up with a solution that cost me a few boards but saved me tons of time. I would pry off both the horizontal and vertical layers at one time from the inside and allow them to fall to the ground where I can work on separating them there.

So that's what I did. And I was right I did lose a couple boards due to breaking during the fall. But probably saved me a day and half at the rate I was going by doing it the way I always did it.

I would get inside and pry the horizontal boards off the wall joist up to the peak of the roof in 8 to 10 foot sections. Both of the layers would fall together and now I just have to pry them apart on the ground.

Probably never something I have to do again because I have never had a building with double layers like this one.

These pics are the sections of the wall as I pried them off the 2x's. This was right before I would make the final separation so it could fall.

Here are some of my finds for today.

The first thing I found was that old hornet's nest in the wall. It was huge. I can't recall ever finding on that large. I pulled it out and laid it next to my 40 inch pry bar for reference. I'm glad they had moved on because I would have had a bad day if that was an active nest.

Then further down the wall I found a little pocket of goodies. First was a little leather bound pocket diary. It looks like it was used to tally cattle, track sales, and had other farmers names and phone numbers in it.

Then I found a baptism certificate.

And then a grazing contract between the guy that owned the property prior and another party.

Then I found an old Dr. Pepper bottle. The Dr. Pepper was actually embossed into the glass and not printed on like you normally see.

My most unusual find today was another soft drink bottle, "Lemonette", which I had never heard of. But the really unusual thing about it was what I found stuck in the neck.

I was brushing it off and something was stuck down into it like a stopper. I thought it was a piece of paper at first until I pulled it out.

It was a mouse.

Evidently he had lived in the bottle. I found the remains of his nest. He must have started living there as a little mouse. Then he eventually grew so big that one day he got stuck leaving and died there.

You never know what you will find in these old buildings.

I got about half of what I wanted to done today but I have a good reason.

I a few hours in the morning 1 day a week and try to prospect for new customers in the Florida market.

I will either Google businesses that sell barnwood or cruise Craigslist looking for recent ads and contact those folks.

I did that until noon and contacted several businesses. One was a large deal that I have been trying for several weeks to speak with their purchasing agent. I finally got through today and was able to speak with him. He is very interested in what I'm offering and asked me to send him pics and contact info. It was a very promising prospect and I was pleased to finally have made direct contact with someone.

I had left messages with 2 other companies and honestly didn't expect a call back. I finally got to work and started loading down my trailer with what I pulled yesterday, emptied it and started back for another. I had left my phone at the site and had missed a call.

I returned it and it was from a gentleman that I had left a message with. Turns out he is one of the largest buyers it barnwood in Florida, regularly buying up to 20000 board feet a month. We talked for a bit. Told him about my company. What I offer. How I operate.

He used to tear down barns also and camped on-site like I do. A lot of similarities. He complained a lot about the freight he was having to pay to get wood shipped in.

Our conversation then turned to what my pricing was. I quoted him $2.00 a board foot which includes delivery. He never batted an eye. Lol. He agreed to that price.. which is the best price I have ever gotten. He said he remembers when he was a small operation like mine and tris to support small businesses like mine all he can.

I'm supposed to take my first load to him next week.

Very very productive day. It doesn't always show what you accomplish by what you load on the trailer.

Oh.. and I figured out why those boards on the second floor were so hard to remove. The ends of the nails sticking out the backside were bent over and nailed down. So I had to straighten them all out before prying them apart so the baords wouldn't split. I made the right choice in pryig sections off and separating them on the ground.

Today was just a repeat of the others. Got all the 1x stuff stripped from the 2 story portion.

Now it's just a matter of pulling the floors and putting it on the ground so I can get to the 2x stuff.

I have to take a load to Florida by Monday so tomorrow and Saturday will be denailing, trimming, and trailer loading.

The pic is of the staging area where I keep my wood out of the weather and the sun.
Probably around 3,000 board feet there.. I gotta make some room lol.

Took off for florida and made it to South Pittsburgh and blew a trailer tire. Was trying to make it to see my grandmother that had not been doing well at all. Made it finally at 2 am.

Got to spend about 30 minut4s with her and then back on the road.

She passed at 4 30 am this morning. I at least got to see her and say goodbye.

Won't be posting much for a few days.
