Things are going to change...

Things in the NCAA are about to change and not for the better. There has been a Bill brought up in the US Senate that will over ride all State Laws, Conference and Division rules that let college athletes profit from their name and image. This will totally change EVERYTHING in amateur college sports.

I understand that players have been taken advantage as far as companies and Universities alike having benefited financially by using these athletes for profit in not only ticket sales and advertising but video games and countless other avenues as well. They are the reason we watch the games and they are the reason that so many schools make so much money.

With that being said they are given a yearly scholarship and a free education if they chose to take advantage of it and that cost is anywhere from $30,000 to $80,000 + a year depending on the school. With that education it has been said that a degree will increase a individuals ability to earn a living by $1,000,000 over a lifetime so that alone is a type of payment.

If this Bill passes individual players or groups of players will be able make deals to benefit just like a pro basically . Nike, Under Armour, Adidas and any other company will be able to pay endorsements to players and potentially steer them to a school that uses their products. It happens now to some extent more so in basketball but it will be open season for all sports and be legal.

What then, will colleges be forced to pay them to play at their school ? Will they become employees of that school and will they be given benefits such a insurance and if they get hurt will they be able to draw workmen comp ? If it is a state school will there be a pay scale set forth by the states which will vary by state. Will private school have to make public how much they will pay ? Will the players get agents and if so will they be considered amateurs at that point ? Will colleges require them to pay their own way. Will this be the end of college football and college sports in general ?

I understand that being a college athlete at a top level requires a huge amount of commitment. There time is consumed with school and training and many come from backgrounds that does not allow then to receive spending money from home. Some do get money in round about ways now and it is widely known practice legal or not. For many a part time job is not practical but they can apply for certain student loans to get that money like many regular students are forced to do.

I think the sad part is if this passes NCAA sports as we know it is gone. All that will be left is the minor leagues and so many of those that are willing to go that route to chase a dream will miss out on the education that many will never be able to afford. That education is what many will need to get out of the situation they are trying to escape and that education is what most will wish they had when that dream never happens.
Honestly, I never dreamed I'd quit the NFL cold turkey. Baseball was easy. Same for the NBA, but the NFL I thought would be hard. It wasn't. If college sports goes down that path, so be it. Hell, I've had a good run since my first game in '65. The product right now isn't that great especially for UT fans. Don't think I'll have a problem finding other things to enjoy on Saturdays.

So you will quit watching football because during a commercial break you might see Mac Jones in an Aflac commercial instead of Nick Saban? Seems reasonable.

They are already getting paid via a FREE education. If they are going to receive money then they should pay their own way through college. Can't have it both ways.

I wonder if this will apply to high schools also.?

You're missing the main way that this will, indeed, change everything. Universities in large cities will completely dominate. It will kill the SEC.

The best talent will go to where they get the most money which will be the league that compromises the best teams. That league will be made up of the top P5 schools and a large majority of those are in the SEC and Big 10 and none of those cities are that big. If the Minor Leagues are formed by the pros then they would not put those in large towns much like they do now.

They'll make the most money doing commercials in big cities.

I disagree, if Nike, EA Sports or Under Armour are paying them it doesn't matter if they are playing in Swamp Creek every one in the country will see it.

Still better than paying them.....
So you don’t believe people should be paid based on their skills and talents? You are worth whatever someone is willing to pay you. And don’t give me the bs about a scholarship...that’s pennies compared to what a lot of these players are worth. I guess you are a Marxist.

College football is already broken. The same teams dominate anyways.
They ruined the pro game with so many penalties determining the final score( you can't hurt the bubble wrapped QB/hitting a player too hard gets you tossed from the game, etc). Now players can jump teams so easy, and wanting to be paid....college is slowly losing it's appeal as well. We now kick a player out of a game for hitting an opposing player when that used to be celebrated.

I guess we prefer giving kids cash under the table?

Tennessee would rather pay them with funds housed safely in a McDonald's bag or surreptitiously through their smart phones.

In reality, the NCAA could have avoided much of this by simply incorporating into a not for profit 501 (c)(4) corporation and get the university presidents out of the mix, rolling the association into a corporation so as to avoid all the Sherman anti trust claims the athletes bring given the manner in which the rules are promulgated and enforced by a determination (collusion) by the involved university presidents. The NCAA, as well as the SEC, is a ticking time bomb for these types of claims restricting, harming, or impairing a player's rights. Every case the NCAA finds itself in they end up losing or settling, primarily because of the way the association is run and how it operates.

Amateur athletics is a beautiful way to enjoy any sporting event, however, the handshakes, McDonald's bags and highly paid summer internships will give way to weekly or monthly stipends, tax forms, withholdings and the ancillary claims that go with it, title IX will wreak havoc on that process as well and many sports will simply be eliminated rather than carry the additional financial burden required for participant compensation.

As bad as it seems, just imagine what a fiasco this would be if Fulmer were still at the helm trying to figure this one out.

Well a little off topic but NFL players took a knee and I quit watching. NBA took a knee and I quit watching. Lady VOLS took a knee last week and I quit watching. I served 6 years in the USN and visited over 10 foreign countries proudly serving my country. I highly respect the flag of the USA and take it personal by those who disrespect it. Based on this I have found that I really don’t miss sports like I thought I would. My new Kubota tractor serves me very well and has taken the place of sports. If amateur sports gets too commercialized , then I’ll most likely quit watching as well. Amateur means just that, amateur. Wanna get paid? Go pro.

Go VOLS

Makes zero sense. Nick Saban is already getting paid by Alabama and then Aflec also decides to hire him. Should that be banned?

If they gey paid, eliminate collegiate sports as we know it and let the kids get paid as soon as they get a HS diploma. Teams would likely be more evenly matched, ticket costs would be cut by 75%, and no donation would be sought by the colleges. One could watch on TV or in person save lot of money and we would not be so caught up in coaching changes, and there would be NCAA violations. We could play 2 rounds on Saturdays and find something more trivial to complain about. I could also repaint my checker board wall in my downstairs den.

There are a few superstars. Then there is the other 99%.

Those players can benefit as well with a contract with a gaming company by having a whole teams likeness on a video game potentially. No body really has any idea what will happen but you can bet that these companies have teams of lawyers looking at how they can make money on it . As far as only having teams in big cities profiting that is only if they do away with college sports. I can't see them moving UT to Nashville or Memphis for market share.

If you want college athletics ruined more than they already are......fine.
Money has already screwed up so much, paying college athletes will only make it worse. High school athletes will be next. Might as well pay flag football kids.

I find it hard to believe that a student athlete is taking advantage of when given free tuition loans, housing, money, and food. Plus the perks of being an athlete. And given that they get all that to play it sounds a lot like an employeer paying their employee to me

What is the obsession with Saban? But yes there is a difference. One is supposed to be an amateur athlete the other is a coach who is working at his profession, not going to school for free (On the taxpayers dime). You can frame it anyway you want but if they pay the football players they will then have to pay the women's field hockey team also. They should just skip college and try to go pro; Many of the players will never graduate anyway. Many would never even get into a college if not for the fact that they can run fast or catch a football.
And I know they won't miss me as a fan, so it's no big deal. But the day they start paying them is the day I'm done with it.

And they should also, like any other citizen, be able to profit if someone sells their image or name on merchandise.

Again, this isn't radical. Either stop trading on the athlete's fame and talent or share the proceeds from the sales. This is the American way. You don't get to sell someone's image and name and not cut them in on the profits.
So how much would you pay for a Peyton Manning UT jersey? How much for a Manning Colts/Bronco Jersey? How much for an unnamed #16 Jersey, or how much for a #21 (or any number) UT jersey? How much for a white Tee shirt with Manning on the back? The facts are that unless the player and the team are linked the value decreases. Very few player would transcend jumping from team to team and having the same level of fame.

I really like this idea, then the Alabamas of this world would automatically be back on par with the rest of us as most of their 5 stars would be going that route.
College football wouldn’t be worth watching then and wouldn’t exist much longer.
