The WRASSLIN’ Thread

I just don't tend to follow wrestlers on social media. I don't really follow celebrities either. It makes suspension of disbelief much less complicated.

The new behind the scenes show doesn't appeal to me. It seems like a reality show. I don't watch those either.

I'm right there with you. I'll occasionally look someone up if I find them interesting, but for the most part, I try to stay away from it. It ruins the immersion and makes the suspension of disbelief harder. It's an escape for me no different than it was when I was a kid. I can see why people like to stay informed on the ends and outs of what goes on behind the scenes, but I try to stay away from it. I think that's what made WrestleMania and NXT:Stand and Deliver so fun to watch. Its nice just being a fan. I can see both sides though....

Yeah, what they call Kayfabe. To make it look like they had legitimate issues with one another. They went to great lengths to hide things from the fans. For example,Ric Flair lived his character 24/7 and it cost him a lot in his personal life.. Like you said, with social media and the cat being out of the bag, guys and girls don't care anymore. You see photos on their social media hanging out with each after a match with each other. I think it's better that way. Fans know what it's all about and still enjoy it. I do for the most part.
Ric Flair is/was who he is. It’s almost as if he adopted the persona, and then made it who he was. It wasn’t a character for him.

While I was way too young to remember to mid 80s during his prime, I think he thought he had to be the "Nature Boy" because it brought it him all the success and it's what everyone remembers him by. You're right that it became who he was as a person. It's been said that you couldn't/can't tell the gimmick from the actual person. A bit sad in a way,but that's his life not mine.

Definitely sad in all that it cost him, but I think he really enjoyed being Ric Flair….and to live the lifestyle was the price.

There is no curtain anymore.
When the undertaker stepped out from the curtain as Mark Calloway that era was over. I’m not saying it was his fault but there are video clips everywhere proving that wrestlers aren’t the same and don’t take that side of the business serious anymore.

Roman and Taker checking into a Hotel.
Lesnar as a heel having dinner with a baby face.

Agreed. Dude is crazy talented. I like Orange. But it's time for a change and Buddy deserves it.

Yeah, OC doesn't need to carry the belt any longer. Have it be like Santino (another comedy guy) winning the IC belt and it be a big deal, but not holding it too long.

As far as Buddy Murphy,he'd make a good International champion(think that it's what they're calling it) A very talented guy. He works great in groups like he did with Rollins in WWE and now with House of Black. He is better fit with groups with other charismatic guys. Nothing against him. Just one of those things.

He did a bang up job on his own with the cruiser weight belt in Nxt/205. He does the heel thing well. Kind of like Pac.

But, I agree he is better in a group. It seems like everyone is in a stable in Japan. House of Black would do some great buisness over there.

It's an exciting time. First, Forbidden Door 2, then Wembley.... Vince has to be stewing. But hell, I don't know how mich I'd stew if im about to make a cool $2 billion.

On another note, watching ECW Holiday Hell 2000 (the final ECW Arena show ).
Let me say, I do love WWE library on Peacock app. I am working my way through the other major promotions. Spike Dudley vs. Jerry Lynn was awesome. I'm telling you, I felt like I was watching Kenny Omega. Omega mist have studied Jerry Lynn or had the same trainer at some point. I know Don Callis is his "mentor." Similar to what Callis was to Jerry Lynn in ECW during this time. I had forgotten how good Spike Dudley was too Crazy crowd

I have a hard time watching a lot of the older stuff. ECW is probably my favorite of it. RVD vs Jerry Lynn is one of the best rivalries of all time. They had thier matches in WWE and TNA. But those early ones in the bingo hall were special.

That's what I was going to mention. His rivalry and matches with RVD were something else. Also,I enjoyed Jerry Lynn in the X-Division in TNA. Enjoyed RVD in TNA as well. A good trip down memory lane for sure.

When I think RVD, I think Sabu. That's the rivalry I remember from ECW.

I just saw the segment between Sting,Darby and MJF and I have to say, that was really cool. It reminded me why Sting is one of my all time favorites even with a short and to the point promo. Putting over Darby in the process. Even though it's worrisome at his age, I'd love to see one more match for the Stinger.. Maybe against MJF for the title to build up Darby's story against MJF. A lot of things they can do.

In other news, it looks like Bron Breakker has turned heel in NXT. He had a good run as a face, but I think he can take some of his uncle's attributes and use them as a heel. I think he'll do really good.

So dynamite was pretty good.

Not a fan of Silas Young getting squashed. But I'm glad Brian Cage decided to hang around. Orange and Buddy had a great match too.

It seems like Vince being back in charge of WWE derailed several signings. White, Cage, and The Righteous(ROH).

Not sure what's up with Bullet Club. They have a leadership battle in Japan and a sub group in The House of Torture. Jay White and Juice with a splinter faction in AEW, with two other former leaders of the club on the roster. Then there are members in Impact too. I'm hoping it's all a setup for Forbidden Door and the plan isn't to dilute the brand long term.

Bullet Club is getting too big. Like nWo did in it's latter years. We should see Bullet Club Red vs. White in a few months lol.

That freaking reverse Frankensteiner that Darby did on Swerve from the ring apron to the floor was insane. I thought Swerve broke his damn neck lol.

Glad Brian Cage is sticking around too. I think he, Buddy Matthews and Alex Reynolds are the most underrated, underused guys on the roster.

Not really sure who Silas Young is. I have heard his name a few times, but I just thought he was a jobber lol.

I'm p*ssed that Buddy didn't win.

I know Silas from old ROH. Great heel that got under utilized a lot. He had a feud with Dalton Castle that was fantastic back when ROH was my main promotion.

For Bullet Club, we have a white and a gold factions already. So I think your spot on.

I'd throw Stu Grayson into the most "underrated" discussion as well.

Don't watch anymore. I'm old school: Tojo Yamamoto, Jackie Fargo, Dusty Rhodes, Andre the Giant et. al. Pardon my curmudgeon-ness.

Hey,that's still great to know. I'm occasionally still watch the old school stuff. I was either too young to remember them or not around yet lol.... Of course everyone remembers Andre. How can you forget?I love hearing stories from people that were old enough to remember the classic wrestlers and their matches. I have family that tells me a lot about it, especially my stepdad. It's fun to listen to. I go and try to be a bit of a wrestling historian and read up and watch the older matches. The 80's is my favorite decade as far as old school wrestling. Thanks for stepping in and mentioning that, though. Cool to know!

Oh you know my love of Stu Grayson. That doesn't need to be said, he's always first on my list.

I remember Silas Young now. Man, he looks different to me. That whole thing with when he won the boys was awesome. I remember that.

Tonight is ECW Guilty as Charged 2001. Man Taijiri was great. He and Mikey Whipwreck were a fantastic team.

Loved those late era ECW PPVs. Tajiri was one of those guys you could make a makeshift tag team with anyone and it would still be fun to watch. I remember him in WWE tagging with Regal,Rhyno and Eddie Guerrero to name a few. Also fun to watch as a singles wrestler.
