The Woke Olympics

Whaaaa. The previous olympic teams were so much weaker and had less "mental" pressure put on them whaaaaa

You may be on to something volstrom. The previous Olympians didn’t have to witness the steal or the surge on the US Capitol. Those athletes didn't have those TV images etched inside their brain so they were free from the mental anguish.

Her medal aspirations cause more stress than trying to keep a family fed and roof over everyone's head?

Yes. What? She's on a stage where her every move is dissected and she can seriously injure herself with any lapse in concentration, which is more stressful than plenty of jobs I've had to put food on the table

Piers should have been on our archery team, because that arrow was on the mark.
So he says, she's the best ever, and she also quit. Doesn't seem like a controversial take. In fact, seems kind of a reasonable observation. But for some bizarre reason, Simone Biles is beyond reproach. The woke mob won't tolerate anyone who says otherwise, much less not worship her as a hero. The collective reaction to this is worse than her quitting in the first place, IMO.

Dude, she's black so white people caused this and she's a hero, okay?

I wonder what the conversation would be like right now had she chosen to "push through" and cost her team from medaling at all.

Some people exist to find the cloud within every silver lining.
I'd guess that most people have a more favorable view of people who try and fail, than quit. Especially in a team sport.

They should just shut up and show the sports. I'm not streaming aquatics to listen to talking heads discuss other sports between dives.
There are a billion events going on at any one time, instead of actually showing different things I get to listen to Mike Tirico talk to Michael Phelps for the eighteenth time about being nervous. I don't care. Show archery or some ****.

I don’t like all the cutting in and out. Hard to get into any one thing. Feels like I’m watching NFL Redzone when I just want to watch a single game

Naomi Osaka: High pressure of Olympics 'a bit much'

"I definitely feel like there was a lot of pressure for this. I think it’s maybe because I haven’t played in the Olympics before and for the first year (it) was a bit much," Osaka said, adding that there was probably a ton of pressure on her opponent as well.

Osaka met with a small group of reporters after initially deciding not to comment after the loss.]

"I feel like my attitude wasn’t that great because I don’t really know how to cope with that pressure so that’s the best that I could have done in this situation."

What’s that got to do with her falling and being pissed at her score

You could be 100 percent correct. Spoiled brat who was upset at her mistake and used the abuse situation as an excuse.

Or she could have been trying to push through and eventually she couldn’t keep her head together and needed a break.

The thing is it could be either and none of us know for sure here so I personally just air with caution.

In my lifetime, I dated one girl that I know of who was raped. We were together for months and I never knew. We were playing video games and I fell on the floor laughing and acted like I was going to pull her off the bed. She immediately began crying and had the most petrified look in her face. I got up and hugged her and she just kept sobbing and said please never do that again. She later “vaguely” told me that she had been raped in her OSU dorm by a few guys and it gave her flashbacks. We dated for years after that and almost married and only a few times did she ever seem to break down from it but it never truly went away for her completely.

The mind is a weird thing and certain smells or even colors or words can bring memories back from decades ago that you thought were totally forgotten.

On this one, I think we need to move on.

Again, you may be totally right but if we are wrong then we are shaming a girl with trauma.

Taken from a friend's post elsewhere:

Elena Mukhina, the 1978 women's gymnastics World Champion, broke her leg and was not permitted the appropriate time to heal. Soviet gymnastics coaches pressured doctors to remove her cast early so she could start training for the 1980 Olympics.

She protested heavily, as she knew her leg was not properly healed and would not withstand the grueling training regimen typical of her sport. Trainers and coaches dismissed her concerns and forced her to continue her training.

While practicing the Thomas Salto (since banned for being so dangerous), she underrotated due to her newly weakened leg, and she landed on her chin. She broke her neck, which rendered her quadraplegic for the rest of her life. She was 20 years old at the time, and died at 46.

Reports from Tokyo are that Simone Biles does not trust her own mind and body right now. Given the high level of difficulty (and danger) of the skills she performs, it is asking A LOT to expect her to continue to perform before that self-trust is restored. By pulling out of the team finals, she is listening to her body and her mind and giving herself enough time to heal so she can continue being the badass Queen she was meant to be.

Simone is doing what Elena was not permitted to do- be a voice for her own body and mental health. Anybody who would malign Simone for pulling out of the team final (and daring them to settle for the silver medal) should consider how they'd feel if, instead of reading the headline "Simone Biles pulls out of team final", they were greeted with "Simone Biles paralyzed during dismount."

And if you asked the rest of Team USA if they'd rather have a healthy Simone Biles or a gold medal, you know damn well what they'd answer, and they wouldn't have to think for a second.
It could be a legit reason, but the timing coming right on the heels of Naomi Osaka's walking away a tennis major just looks "interesting".

Jesse Owens had to deal with pressure in Berlin.

Jesse Owens had to deal with pressure in Berlin.

Man that's different. People were expected to work hard back then. Geez. Racism and white supremacy wasn't a thing back then.

I'm sure Jesse hated this country and didn't have any pride and felt he must show the world he had an axe to grind.

I'm sure Progressives from all over probably were saying kneel Jesse and show how much hate America and almost a century later don't expect it to be much better than today. A father, loving husband - psst what's that?

She did but she is still a great athlete and arguably the greatest to compete in her sport. I personally wouldn’t consider that soft. She has contended and won at the highest level with the best in the world. Hell if she claims she is dealing with mental issues then maybe something is going on. I realize this is not the same thing but did you think Michael Jordan was soft when he quit on the bulls and retired in his prime back in 1993? He was mentally exhausted back then and dealing with stressful stuff.
Sorry but MJ didn’t quit on his team in the 3rd game of the finals and just walk away. Big difference

I know no active posters on VN have ever come close to sniffing an iota of the success Biles has had in her life, so suffice to say none of us know what kind of pressure she's under, let alone have any insight into her mental state. Not to mention that you can look at the history of kids and teenagers that gained fame and notoriety and see that a substantial chunk of them faced some serious mental issues, mainly due to gaining the fame and everything that comes with it at such a young age.
Add to it the sexual abuse she had to endure

Someone in here sarcastically stated, "I suppose she's beyond reproach".

She sure is from most of this bunch who have no f'ing clue whatsoever about competing at that level
