The Weightlifters Thread

I think I may start doing Insanity after work for cardio. I know it's tough, but maybe I can lose weight and build muscle mass if I just eat a lot and do crap tons of cardio.

Let me know how that works out. Don't expect to gain much muscle or strength while doing a ton of cardio. Also if you haven't seen any gains at all in a month I highly doubt diet or no supplements are the reason. Usually in the first couple months is when you're gonna see some good gains & it will taper off. That's when you need to focus most on diet & supplements & mixing up your routine.

Honestly, I got the gym membership to lose weight, then decided, screw it, I'm gonna build a little and then lose the fat.

I'm neither looking to get ripped or build a lot of mass. Just bulk up a tiny bit and get into a little better shape.

I've been eating between 3,500 and 4,000 calories a day, and taking in an additional 32g of protein with breakfast and 32g of protein just before working out at lunch. I haven't tracked the protein in my meals, though.

Just curious but how much do you weigh? 3500-4000 kcal is pretty high for most people. Definitely good call to bulk now then cut later. More effective than trying to lose fat and pack on muscle at the same time.

Behind the scenes. Discussing the weight gain. Funny stuff.

About 180. 5'11"

You wanna lose weight? That's ideal or maybe a little under your ideal weight. Not sure of your build but a good weight training program & some moderate cardio would probably get you where you want to be. Also you want most of your protein from food not a shake. One or two a day is about all you wanna drink if you don't wanna have a baby when you poop.

This is what I did. It takes a while.

I'd try to get about 3000-3500 cal/day. Unless you're highly active every day, you'd still be in a caloric surplus. If you can get a good estimate of your protein intake, make sure it's 1.25-1.5 g per lean body weight desired, and you should put on muscle and not too much fat. JMO but I read up on this stuff a lot.

The best way to do it is by eating clean. You eat the same amount of calories, with a high intensity training routine and you can lose while you gain. If you are already in decent shape it's harder to "lose and gain".

Doing both cycles simultaneously is generally fruitless unless you're still relatively new. It can be done, but yields are minimal. Definitely best to do one or the other at any given time.

There's not a bodybuilder alive that eats clean to gain mass. When they bulk it's eating anything & everything & as much as they can. That's how they build muscle. It takes a lot of calories & protein to fuel that much muscle mass. Then when they prep for a contest it's a strict diet, a ton of cardio, & weight loss supplements like cenbuterol or whatever else. There steroid regimen varies from bulk to cut but nothing works without putting in the work.

That's what I did. For me, I got to the point I didn't have as much to lose in relation to what I wanted to gain.

It was when I was new - trying to get in relatively good shape as baker put it. I felt it would give me a better foundation going forward.

I don't plan on riding a bike, I would just get fat eating whatever I want..

I'd like to lose 5-10 lbs, but mainly I want to lose body fat, not weight. I don't care what my weight is, really.

That was just an over the top example. Of course you won't consume 10,000 calories a day if you only have 2 hours, 4 days a week to workout. You gotta find a good balance that works for you but don't expect to consume 2000 calories a day & lift weights for 45 minutes & do cardio for an hour & pack on any considerable muscle.
