To preempt a long series of "____ gets hurt, how do we recover from that?" threads, two of which we've already seen (a masochistic one on Dobbs and recently a second about Hurd), let's just get this out of the way.
What if ________ is injured and out for several games?
Dobbs -- well, we just get to see how good Dormady can be, and we find out whether Jones or Guarantano are next up in the succession. We'll be fine, but might take a week or two to readjust the offensive scheme to fit the new QB.
Hurd -- Kamara becomes the featured back with John Kelly spelling him. Dobbs probably runs more QB draws and options, as well. Won't hurt us as much as one might think, though there will be a drop-off in production.
Barnett -- in 2014 or 2015, I'd have said we were in big trouble. This year, we can afford it more than any time recently. Lot of weapons at DE.
KMac (or O'Brien, or any other DT) -- could be trouble, we're already thin. Look for even more shifting of DEs to the 3 technique inside.
Kirkland -- think we'd see Jumper filling in. Would he be up to the job this year? Only time would tell. If there is ONE player on the team whose health you want most strongly to pray for, this might be the spot. Here or...
JRM -- we do have good OLB options behind Jalen, but what we'd miss the most is his on-field leadership. If Kirkland is the brain of the defense, Barnett is its muscle, and Sutton is its spine...well, JRM is its heart.
Sutton -- we're rich...would be a drop in experience and savvy, but pure talent and skill would make up for much (not all) of it.
So there you go, we don't need any more "what if _______ got hurt" threads this year, this one covers them all. Feel free to toss in your own $.02 here. That's certainly all mine are worth. And let's be done with this self-flagellation.
Go Vols!
