The shut down thread

Not really, but I think he was gonna try to have migrants build it as some sort of technical victory.

If they were serious about this, two years into the "emergency" they would have had a detailed proposal outlining exactly where a wall was needed, along with sites for any other technological improvements.

Of course they're not serious. This is just a gimmick to keep the red hats worked up.

Word.

Think about this: Is a national emergency something you can plan to declare 3 weeks down the road... or is it something that must be dealt with in the moment, requiring immediate attention? It is ridiculous for Trump to suggest that we are in the throes of a national emergency but he can wait 3 weeks to take action against it.

But it's somehow different for all those asylum seekers who wait a year to join a caravan, right? I guess the emergency depends on the side of the political spectrum as viewed through liberal eyes.

Basically, yes... but it's important to point out what it is about Trump that is so offensive to their senses. It's not his spray tan. Throughout the 2016 campaign, he made a promise that he knew he couldn't fulfill (Mexico paying for the wall) and he embellished the case for the wall by denigrating the migrants themselves through fear mongering. It was all done in the name of pandering to the far right.

Trump is or at least should be offensive to anybody between half wit and genius. However, he's still your president because your side actually ran someone more offensive.

If he had just proposed something intelligent, like incremental barrier expansion, it probably would have sailed through.

Did anyone know what $5.7 billion was supposed to build? As far as I could tell, it was a number someone picked out of thin air.

Do you actually think that the cost of any legislation isn't pulled out of thin air ... or more likely elsewhere? We as a nation are head over heels in debt because the people elected to congress don't know their butts from a hole in the ground when it comes to understanding cost - both current and especially the ticking time bombs down the road. The CBO couldn't find it's butt with both hands, a searchlight, and a map; and congress makes the CBO look like a collection of math wizards..

I gave you the basis of the Democratic opposition. Trump made the wall symbolically important. This was about symbolism. Added bonus was that no one really thought it would have been money well spent. Most thought additional barriers in some areas would help, but that the money would be better spent on other border security technology.

lol. What a load of horse💩. Regardless, if something fixed a problem, symbolic or not, WGAF?

Don't fret fellas, we are getting a see-through smart wall soon. It might already be there, how would we know?

Border security, yeah a combination of things, but with Trump wanting to make his rhetoric manifest into reality without any real details attached,.. why would anyone in Congress go along with that?

They went along with obamacare and all the "shovel ready" stimulus projects, so why not? Seems like extra deterrent at the border certainly makes a lot more sense than a study of pelosi's SF field mice.

Cost vs benefit, for one. It just took Trump a while to realize his expectations would have to be lowered.

Do you have a clue how stupid that sounds? The stimulus was chock full of project's like nancy's field mice; there is no cost justification for stuff like that.

It might sound stupid to you, but no more stupid than a 30 foot concrete wall.

Sure you can. If there’s an issue that needs resolving and others can help rectify the situation then give them time to do so. If they refuse and you have the power to fix it then you do so and let it be known about those that failed to act.
Its beyond stupid to think this is a National emergency. No one has claimed it is yet. So it wasn’t when Trump first took office but is now? I mean you guys do realize Trump doesn’t even believe this. At least his actions say he doesn’t. Don’t care about his words.
