The Runner's thread

Congrats Yankee great time

I will be doing the Nashville half as well. Love the rock and roll series. Best by far

13.1 miles this morning 1 hour 49 min

Just read a great article in running times about recovery training.

The article talks about how your body burns lactic acid in the early stages of your run as fuel. When you get to the later stages that is when you hit you "lactic threshold" that makes running hard. By doing recovery training (such as fartleks) you train your body to use more lactic acid for fuel allowing you to run farther and faster

Question to you runners about ear buds. I use iPhone and use the normal white buds but they seem to fall out a lot while I run. Does anyone have any that they use that seem to fit snugly without sliding around in the ears and falling out?

I use a Phillips waterproof that has multiple sizes. Best I've used. Target carries it, but only comes in Red.

Thanks Tri. Question for you guys. Do you breathe in and out through your nose when running? A friend of mine who runs told me to do that and I've taken their advice. Seems difficult at first but I seem to not suck wind that bad

I find this only works if you breathe well through your nose. I can not so I breathe only through my mouth which seems to have worked well for me.

I use the iPhone earbuds that fit completely around your ears and are water proof.... Since I sweat like a mad man.

I use some Philips ear buds that have the hook that go around your ear. They are pretty comfterable and seem to stay in my ears pretty well.

YankeeVol congrats on your time and finishing your half.

Interval training, no? Also proven to be more beneficial cardiovascularly and weight management wise.

Usually your body can only move as fast as your heart can pump blood. If you teach your heart to regulate itself quicker then you can run faster. Teaching it how to speed up and slow down as well as getting your heart rate up is the best training when it comes to increasing your PB. The best times I ever seen have been after about 3 weeks of constant fartlek training.

I usually use a track and run 4 - 400's, 4 - 200's, 4 - 100's as fast as I can go (warm up and cool downs are necessary). I also don't put a time on how soon I need to run the next one as I let my heart rate tell me. The more I do it the quicker my return to the line becomes. I wouldn't suggest more than 2 (possibly 3) times a week of speedplay.

Anybody have a group of friends or co-workers they run with? I am trying to get a couple of guys here from work to start running together at least one or two days week. Can't seem to get the motivated enough to do so.

To the earbuds question: I wear skullcandy buds, and they have different sizes of earpieces. Sound great, not cheap.

doubting my commitment to running this ultra since my longest run has only been 15 miles. told the wife and she said you can do it just put one foot in front of the other.

She's right... all you gotta do is keep putting one foot in front and other til your done. Don't doubt your commitment.

If I can finish a half marathon you can do the ultra. Good luck and don't give up
