The Runner's thread

Do you guys have any advice for shin pain/splints after runs?

It seems like I hurt myself after every couple 3 mile runs and have to take a week off just to heal.

Yankee's suggestion is a good one.

Also might try: Icing 20 mins before and 20 mins after. I had bad shin splints for a while and that was the only thing that worked for me. Good luck.

4 miles yesterday afternoon. 7:47 pace. Started to cramp up a little bit the last quarter mile or so. Just tells me I am going to have to drink more water.

Two slow miles today. I could blame the heat and walking around Pinehurst all day yesterday watching practice rounds for the US Open yesterday, but bottom line, I gotta start doing speed work again and really put forth effort in my short runs.

So I went on vacation last week and only ran 2.50. I guess that is more than what most do on vacation.

I got my bib for the Peachtree Road Race and my wave starts at 7:45. Ugh. lol

I just signed up for the Nashville Half in November and the St. Jude's marathon 5K for December. So I need to run today.

Curl your toes down. I do this while I run as I feel them coming on. It helps a bit.

Read once that sitting in a chair with a towel stretched out on the floor then pulling the towel toward you by curling your toes will help relieve and prevent shin splints.

2.1 yesterday after work. 7:18 pace. Started back working my core the passed week or so and can already tell a difference. Hopefully I can keep this up and help improve my times on longer distances.

My company usually plays what we call Ultimate Football on Fridays for PT. Today is the last day my Company will all be together as they are doing a reorganization throughout our battalion and my company is being disbanded. We played one last time and for giggles I used my Nike watch just to see how much I ran during it. 3.72 miles.

Only a couple of months old.

I do have very flat feet though. I'm starting to think I need get some inserts or something.

Watch your stride length. Make sure you're not trying to increase your mileage to quickly. Try running on a softer surface.
