The Runner's thread

Hey guys, I just took up running about two months ago. I started out at 3/4 of a mile continuously, but I'm up to running a 5k without stopping in around 35 minutes.

I never thought I would be able to run that far, or that I would be able to do it so quickly after picking it up. I would like to get faster though. My goal is a 10k in < 50 minutes. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should start picking up speed?

Run intervals. Easy run for 10 minutes to warm up, hard run (8 out of 10) for 60 seconds, jog for 60 seconds, repeat 5 times, easy run for 10 minutes to cool down. You can make it harder by increasing the time of your hard run, decrease the jog time or increase the reps. Google interval run training for other variations and suggestions. The key is to make sure the intervals are based on time and not distance. That keeps you honest.

Not bad at all. I'm about to get back on the pavement, after I find my legs, and train for another half coming in April.

6.3 this morning in some new Miz Wave Prophecy rigs. Seriously good shoe. Had gone to Gel Kinsei and will rotate with these. The foot fit and forward lean are great. The cushioning, for a big guy like me are helpful. Might rotate out the kinsei if these keep up the support.

i've never run in Mizuno's but i've always heard good things. I'm still trying to get over a high ankle sprain.
