The Runner's thread

7 miles during the second half of the game. We actually outscored GA 12-7 while I was out. I guess I should've gone ahead and run a half marathon.

Ended up running 13 miles yesterday. I'm feeling better and better on these long runs. Ran at an easy pace and finished that run in about 2.5 hours. As the weather gets cooler I'll focus more on improving my pace, along with working on my stride as well.

So I went to the podiatrist today. No running for me for awhile. Apparently both ankles (left more than right) aren’t so good right now

That sucks man, sorry to hear. Ankles are the worst for runners. The thought of injuring my ankle literally makes me sick to my stomach. Speedy recovery for you man.

I lift about 3 days a week and run shorter distances those days and try to do longer runs (5k to 5 miles) twice a week. I do the ab wheel a lot I can tell that seems to help. I just need to up my distances and once it cools off I will start to stretch it.
Im about to do the USMC marathon later this month, it will be my 5th full. There is an excellent training plan at marathonrookie.com
A full is a different animal than a half. I think someone said earlier, training is key to a full and that is absolutely correct. A full is a whole other animal compared to a half. Put in lots of miles, try not to gain any excessive weight while training and experiment with gels and such on long runs. It took my a while to figure out the sugar in gels such as gu and stinger upset my stomach so I had to switch to hammer or ucan. Little stuff like that will make a big difference in your time.

Good luck.

Might need a scope on at least my right if not both just to clean things up. Lots of fractures over the years(most I wasn’t even aware of or felt symptoms).

That sucks. If you would like me to check on a foot specialist Ortho (which is what I would recommend) in Nashville, I'd be happy to do so. There are a couple in Knoxville that are fantastic, but I know that's not convenient for you.

I appreciate it, but I doubt I could do it off post

What types of energy gels and carbohydrates do you find are easy on the stomach to take during a long run? Last week when I ran 13, I took 2 of the Cliff energy gels - I took the first before I started running and the second at the 7 mile mark. They're 100 calories each with 50mg of caffeine and they didn't lead to an upset stomach or anything. I felt great up until the last 3 miles when I could tell my muscle glycogen was totally depleted. I'm sure that me being on the ketogenic diet, along with having spent about 90 minutes earlier in the day lifting, contributed to hitting the wall.

Yeah im sure that aided. Im not on a super strict diet like keto, wish I were.
I used to use clift and liked them. I try to avoid sugar so I use hammer gels. They have 2 grams of sugar where clift has about 12 I think. There is another brand called ucan that is good. It's a powder and you can put it.in water, as a sub for Gatorade, or make a gel / paste out of it.
I actually get hungry on long runs so I take a pack of happy baby, baby food (I know I know) and sometimes ill use those uncrustable sandwiches, pb and honey.

I appreciate the insight. I'll check into where I can get the best deals on a box or two. What flavors of the hammer gel do you find are the most palatable? The cliff gel I get at Kroger are all this mocha flavor that I would pass on for something lighter.

Yeah I cant do any of the mocha / chocolate type stuff. The downside to hammer is they are limited on favor compared to clift or gu. I like orange, tropical and Montana huckleberry the best. I use the strawberry powder in water.

@GoVolsDR I did an 18 miler this morning and tried this gel called Huma Chia.(mango.flavor). You should give it a try. Goid effect and flavor. The texture is much more like a food rather than a gel. I really liked.it.

Nice, I'll have to check that out. I'm still finishing off my Cliff gels. That Cliff gel is so gross, but luckily the carbs hit quickly. I only ran 6 miles on Saturday because I felt my calf starting to cramp, and I wanted to get back home in time to watch the 3:30 games. I spent yesterday doing my targeted re-carbing up and stretching. Hopefully today's run goes a lot better.

Three miles Monday and three yesterday. I was off work yesterday so I got to run around 9 olcock and it was about perfect weather to run in.

8.2 from Tyson park, along the Neyland Greenway, to John Sevier Hwy and back. I got passed by a guy pushing a baby stroller which somehow encouraged me to finish strong.

Ran the Ragnar Bourbon Chase Relay over the weekend. Had legs of 7.2 miles, 5.4 and 6.7. Ran through Kentucky, through all the different bourbon distilleries

Didn’t hit Roland. Starts at Jim Beam, with Heaven Hill, Makers Mark, Wild Turkey, Four Roses, Woodford Reserve and I think I’m skipping one.
Ahh ok. Was just curious as I live about 20 minutes from MB Roland.
