The Runner's thread

fwiw, I've read literally dozens of articles saying the elevation masks are bunk. They simply make it difficult to breathe, nothing more.

I have seen an article or two that say the same thing. I haven't ever used one and only know a few people who have one and they only use them while they are lifting weights and running stadiums or sprints.

Question for you runners (from a non-runner)...

Have any of you had any injury/issue with your IT band around the outside of your knee? If so, how have you treated it and what's the recoup time?

I was trying to get back into exercising a couple of months ago and was doing some lunges and ever since the outside, middle of my (right) knee has had a dull pain. I can walk fairly normal with no pain, even jog, etc. When I try to sit Indian-style is when I really feel the discomfort. Don't feel like I tore or pulled anything. With everything I've read online, the closest it sounds like is IT Band Syndrome. Sounds like ITBS is fairly common in runners so thought I'd ask...

The stretch below (horrible photo and not me, but no way I as going to be able to describe the stretch) helped me out tremendously. Also, squats worked wonders. Not sure why, but once I started doing squats twice a week, my band relaxed dramatically.

Thanks Scooter! I'll try the stretch (and squats) although the the position of the knee in that stretch is what typically causes the the most pain. 😬

I do a lot of squats. Like the amount you wish your girl did. No lie. They help tremendously with running.

No running this weekend. Went to visit the family for the weekend. At around 9am Saturday, my niece and nephew wanted to hang out with Uncle Bull as they call me for a "couple of hours". They were glued to me until I left about 4 hours ago, but that's something worth missing a run or two for!

No problem, anything for a fellow Raleigh-ite.

You can try the same stretch on your back with a slight variation. Keep your left leg like the picture, but bring your right knee to your left ankle. Pull in your right knee while your left elbow pushes out on your left knee. You should feel the stretch from your left hip to your knee. Hopefully that makes sense

4 yesterday afternoon. I am ready for this rain to stop. Supposed to be nice this weekend and if it is I will try and get some miles in.

52 for the month and 130 for the year.

I've always found it interesting that the runners thread is in the pub, but the weightlifting thread is in the sports forum.

Also, damn some of yall run alot. How thin are yall? I need to cut some fat so I'm trying to run more

I'm 6'2 and 220 lbs. If I would quit eating like crap I would be around 200.

I was on a run last week. I was on my 3. Nice easy pace and wasn't winded. All of a sudden I lost my breath and my heart starts racing. I get very dizzy to the point of almost passing out. I sat down for about 10 minutes and then decided to walk home because it wasn't going away. I got home and my wife took my pulse but it was too fast to count and my BP was 160/110. I'm 33 and bever have had any blood pleasure or heart issues. Have any of you ever had his happen?

Never had that happen during a run. I have felt like I was going to pass out afterwards once or twice and that was because I didn't eat prior to running and I ran a pretty good distance.

Had you eaten recently before your run?

Not directly before but I'm not hungy when I go. I wasn't tired or breathing hard at all when this happened. It was sudden and out of no where n

Interesting. Sounds like your blood sugar dropped, but I am far from an expert. Have you set an appointment with a doctor?

4.25 last night in a really cold wind. Getting comfortable with distance, now I need to up the speed and drop about 20lbs to be back to my fall 5k times. I want to hit under 25 minutes ASAP.

6 last night at 8:02 pace. Felt slow the second half of the run. Probably because I was running into a strong wind almost the whole way back.

5K on the 12th. 2 years ago it snowed 6 inches the night before. Hopefully that doesn't happen again
