The Runner's thread

What's the weather like out there right now?

Didn't get to run today ankle is still sore but got in the in laws pool and stretched it out and it feels much better. Should be good to go by Monday afternoon.

Bout 75 today. Good luck tomorrow. Hope the pain subsides

I've recently started running and playing a lot of basketball. The problem I'm running in to is with my ankles. They hurt like hell.

Any tips on how to efficiently strengthen them?

Ice them down and rest them

Woke up this morning with a little pain but we will see how today goes because this is the first day of work since it happened. I will see how sore it is at the end of the day because I am on my feet most of the day here.

Run was fun. I really enjoyed the run. Except for the fact I twisted me right ankle twice. Once like 60 feet into the run and the second time about 300 feet from the end. The second time I turned it I definatly yelled loud enough that the guy I was running with heard me through his head phones and was about 500 feet behind me. I am now laid up icing it. Its a little sore but should be good to go by Monday's run.

After 3 or 4 runs you won't twist your ankle. Your body will learn where to step.

I've been running or actively playing sports my whole life and I probably twist my ankle at least 4 times a year. I just have weak ankles from playing basketball. I can literally be walking perfectly normal and my ankle (either of them) just gives out. And I'm not counting all the time I twist and can just walk it off.

I hope so Tri, because I really enjoyed the trail run. It was challenging and I can see why you enjoy it so much. Being surrounded by nature and stopping half way through the run to take in the mountains was awesome. I will be doing this again.

Decided it was about time to take my runs back inside for the summer. Forgot what it feels like to not be suffering from heat exhaustion at the end of a run.

It was a hard decision to make because I really wanted to run last night but I talked myself out of it and instead of running made my work out a little last a little longer.

Just remember to ignore the obstacles and focus on where you want to step.

don't know if you wear an insert but i found it would cause my foot to sit higher in the shoe and more prone to roll.

While watching tv, write the alphabet with your big toe. that will help strengthen your ankle.

that works, but with each roll, your tendons get more and more susceptible to rolling over and there's very little you can do to stop it. I've been told by an ortho doc that I will never actually break my ankle because they will roll over way before I come close to a break.

Interesting. you ever considered wearing an ankle wrap?

I always do when I play basketball, but it's too uncomfortable for running. I've noticed in the minimalist shoes, it happens far less frequently (I'm guessing the same principle as you and an insert). It's just something I've learned to deal with.

I remember you saying that in an earlier post and tried to remember to do that when I was running and for the most part did but it's when I had that short memory lapse that I turned my ankle and paid for it. I will hopefully learn from those mistakes.

I don't wear inserts.

I will try the alphabet thing to try and strengthen my ankle. I generally don't have a problem with turning my ankles.

Thanks for all the input it is greatly appericated.

Tempo run today

2 mile warm up then 3 miles at tempo pace and a 2 mile cooldown.

The three miles was done at 18:34 which is 5 seconds/mile faster than my last 5k. And I don't feel like I was pushing as hard as I did in my last race. HR was ~90% so I had a little more left to give.

First run since the twisted ankle. 3.2 miles at a 7:30 pace. Little slower than normal but to be expected. Ankle didn't feel bad during the run. Little bit of soreness afterwards but thirty mins of ice and forty five mins in the pool and just about all the soreness is gone.

My daughter and I ran(slow jog) a half mile tonight. I let her pace me. She finally got the concept of nice and easy. She jogged 85% of the way. I was proud of her.
