The QB Debate.... Post Bama (merged)

if chryst was so good at reading defenses, why didnt the offense score not one dang point in the 2nd half?

in fact, didn't he give up points? a safety. he scored for bama in the second half

and before u go blaming chandler or anyone else.....u dont consider it for JG so save it

Agreed. The o-line has given Chryst more time on most of his throws than JG. Not to take away from Chryst, he's done great and I hope he keeps it up.
JG has done a good job, but the fact is, Chryst did not have more time; he just takes a lot less time to get rid of the ball. JG takes a wind up, as if throwing a baseball. Chryst shoots the ball immediately, kinda like Peyton. I have not understood why they have not worked a lot on JG getting the ball out; making quicker decisions. With the receivers we have, it could make a world of difference.

I want every player to do good and be the best they can be. We are the Vols, and we are a team.

Maybe because they have eyes and can make observations, even though they aren't anymore accurate than anyone else's. And I have coached numerous NFL teams myself. Mike Shula said his Dolphin team was undefeated only because of my expertise at calling plays. I have also been nominated for 'Liar of the Year' 3 years running.

All this to say that from my own observations, and as much as I like JG, he acts like a cat on a hot tin roof at times when he needs to stay calm and pay particular attention to defensive shifts that blow up many of our plays when he's under center. Not to mention the personal injury risk to himself. It is evident from what I've seen that KC possesses the skills between the ears that JG has not shown yet. And even 3 weeks ago, I was defending the other side of this argument. That's no lie.
Didn't know Mike Shula coaches the Dolphins. Lol

Every last bit of what you just said, is all made up in your head, it's not fact based. So stop acting like your opinion is the ultimate arbiter of truth.

Do you even watch the games? You see it with your eyes. I'm not making up what I said.

You just don't want to hear it so instead of proving how he's supposedly not confused or immature you just state your opinion without providing and facts or even attempting to.

I was asked to elaborate, and I did.

Guarantano has took more hits than any quarterback in recent ut history and got up everytime but a guy that came in and threw a couple decent balls looks more sturdy to you. Smh. I’m not sure what planet some of you guys reside on.

You think he will remain sturdy if he continues to take all those hits? It's a health/injury threat to himself and it doesn't help us win..

JG didn't beat Auburn, VOLS beat Auburn. Carry on.

I get what you're trying to say, but we don't win the Auburn game without JG's performance. It took special from him (and the wide receivers) to win that game. Chryst showed the ability to make several different throws yesterday and showed great poise against pressure, but I don't think he starts at SC if JG is 100%. JMO. With that being said, I don't think the coaches will hesitate to pull JG out if the offense needs a spark.

I think it’s safe to say that we have a pretty good backup qb. A lot of teams don’t have that. If JG were to go down, I don’t think the offense is totally screwed. It’s a good situation to be in.

Fact is, neither qb right now is top shelf, but both are pretty good from what I’ve seen. Neither are also the problem. If rest of team holds up their end of the deal, specifically OL, then I don’t know that it matters which qb plays, unless JG is banged up. Given time, both can hit receivers and if not given time, it’s tough for both. Like Pruitt keeps saying, if we can’t run the ball it’s gonna be tough to win. That’s our biggest problem. I think qbs are interchangeable.

I’ve watched most of Chryst’s game since from his time at Stanford and, IMO, the “better at reading defenses than JG” thing is pretty obviously true. But really moreso in pre-snap than anything else.

He had plenty of games where he struggled when opponents disguised things because he doesn’t really have the arm fit a lot of balls in tight windows.

From what we’ve seen so far though I don’t think it would be a big surprise if he gets the offense moving a bit more consistently at the expense of being less of a threat to push the ball downfield consistently.

I do think he may run into some trouble if teams blitz less and leave more guys in coverage, though. We’ll probably see more of his passes get jumped than we saw from JG. But it may just even out with the all the sacks/fumbles we was before.

Seemed pretty effective when he hung in there and took a beating while beating auburn.

I mean over time, in the long run. He got beat up by floridum, Auburn, bama badly. What if it continues? Which is possible with the oline in its current state.

He also hasn't seen a lot of snaps against 1st team defenses that were bringing pressure. That's what I was getting at when I asked if anybody thought KC would fare any better with extended action behind this o-line. Maybe he'd fare better, but I'm not optimistic.

I agree with this. Some on this board think that anything that glitters is gold. KC played well, and to his credit he avoided a hit or two by getting the ball out of his hands quickly. At the end of the day, though, Alabama already had the game in hand when he came in. They weren't bringing the same pressure looks that they were when JG was in the game. Were some of the hits JG took on him? Absolutely. He held the ball too long on a couple of plays, similar to what he's done throughout his career. The play he got hurt on, though, was symbolic of what we've seen from the OL all season long.

At the end of the day, I don't think benching JG is the right thing to do until he truly gives you a reason to bench him. He didn't play well against Alabama, the best team in the country, a team that was inevitably going to throttle us no matter what we did. He's not the first QB to struggle vs Alabama this season. If he's 100% by Saturday, start him. If he's not, go with KC. If JG is 100% and struggles, pull him out and give the reigns to KC. That's where I am on this.

Yes they blitzed KC. He saw it and reacted to it. Why cant you clowns just give the kid some credit? Should be a positive thread but the JG sycos have to come drag it down.

FYI...never been on JG band wagon. It just seems the moment the back up plays all the other morons then know more than the coaches!

JG played a good game against the Auburn and deserved the acknowledgement last week. Keller played a good game against Bama and deserves the acknowledgement this week.

This is not rocket science.

naw buddy. i dont hide from reality. and im grown....very much grown. the man just beat Auburn and threw for 300+. everyone sees the line gets him killed, yet he still battles. its still not enough. if you have a better answer to what it could be... WE ARE ALL EARS! otherwise........u aint saying much

You're the one using words like hate and implying that anyone who disagrees with you is a bad person or racist. Why don't you back it up with some actual evidence? Show us one thing anyone has said that is racist against JG or anyone else on the team.

In the long run hopefully we get some offensive lineman that can protect him!

No, I meant exactly what I said. This is a good example of why I’m out of patience with the JG sycophants. They simply won’t admit that anything ever is his fault or responsibility. What’s up with the blind obsession for this player?

Constantly attempting to shut down debate on a discussion forum over a legit subject is ridiculous.
JG makes mistakes and has flaws. The coaches still think JG is better and so do I.

Its no more ridiculous than fans on a message board trying to act like they know what a QB on the college level is doing wrong or right. JG has done plenty wrong. But he also has done plenty right. Thats obvious because the coaching staff named him the starter.

We are allowed to have opinions. Bray was better than the coaches pick. Dobbs was better. Tua was better. It happens man some backups just come in and take over. Coaches make mistakes at picking QBs all the time.

If JG had more time he would be good. He does not release the ball fast enough and can not scramble one bit. Unless he gets that good protection our offense won't do much and that's this year or next year. If he does he can sling it that we know.
