The QB Debate.... Post Bama (merged)

It's a lot of facial expressions & body emotions that are probably overlooked most of the time but if you watch closely you do see it.

Pouty-ness on the sideline when he wasn't starter last year is a prime example.

Confusion on many plays (and yes I know he's learning a new scheme under the new coaches) but it's still relevant.

There's been times I've seen him look confused as to which type of play it is supposed to be (standing looking at the coaches on the sideline for over 10 seconds as the play clock is dwindling) and that's last year and this year so it's hard to blame the current coaches...

He somehow really lacks the ability to read very obvious blitzes. He stands still.

I wish him all the best of course. I just don't think he is or will be 'the' guy. Shrout (or a new recruit) very well may take the starter job and JG will transfer to an easier conference.

What exactly makes you think he is not immature? What have you seen? (Not being snide; genuinely curious).
Every last bit of what you just said, is all made up in your head, it's not fact based. So stop acting like your opinion is the ultimate arbiter of truth.

it's ok to have two good quarterbacks, or even three.
I got a feeling Tua will be in for a rude awakening when he gets to the league. He won’t have the benefit of having an other-worldly advantage to support him at every other position.
Everyone has their opinion, but I think he may be one of the best qb's I've ever seen (granted, in college). NFL race to worst record next year for rights to pick him.

Not saying he won’t be good...but he won’t put up the video game numbers he is now. He is working with a ridiculous supporting staff right now.

I didn’t say anything about JG?

For the record I think guarantano is the guy. He gives us an edge the Chryst wouldn’t, even if Chryst would be the safer option.
That's debatable. I thought Kryst looked cool as a cucumber playing. I wouldn't complain if we started him along with Calloway,Jennings, Byrd, Chandler. Those are our best athletes period on offense. They're playing Byrd because he's blocking well, but I still feel he's a threat. JG's went to him 3 times this year and 2 were uncatchable and a 3rd the defender was all over Byrd's back. Chryst goes to him and puts the ball in a good place were only Byrd can catch it for a TD. My opinion is that Chryst may see the field better and react faster than JG does. JG seems to come to the line and already has a primary receiver in mind and focuses on that one receiver.

KC got blitzed, and hit. He just got the ball out early enough, something JG needs work on.
The reality is KC has a very quick release much like Tua -- there are obvious advantages to that over JG's long slow delivery style. KC also recognizes defenses and works through his progressions better. It is what it is - I am confident JG will be our primary qb for the next few games - primarily because he is a sophomore and KC will be out of here. - but if I were drafting a team ..... I would pick KC first and every time over JG - for the above mentioned reasons. He surely aided his draft stock just based on his play yesterday. Small sample ... but he played exceptionally well. Think Nathan Peterman vs. Florida and compare that to KC yesterday. Looking back - he will have the best qb rating against Alabama of everyone that they play this year, including the playoffs and that is saying something.

I like both our quarterbacks --- ( NOTE ) Would like to trade one for a couple of offensive linemen.

In a 58-21 loss? Equivalent to being the smartest kid in summer school imo. He played fairly well in relief of JG, especially given the circumstances. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Nice to know he’s a competent backup.
It's time to promote him from back up and see what he can do, in last weeks game all JG done was throw 50-50 balls, our receivers balled out and made him look good.

It isn’t something you work on at this point. As a 3rd year college QB, if he doesn’t have a feel for reading defenses, picking up blitzes, and getting rid of the ball by now, he isn’t going to get it.

Time to move on and find someone that can.

Watching the 97 Tenn Bama game on ESPN classic right now. It looks the 97 players are way bigger than the players we have now especially in the OL.

Yes!
JG comes to the line with his mind made up where he is going to throw it. The reason, I think, is he does not know how to do otherwise. If he does, he "thinks" too slowly. The announcers were talking about his "not reading the defense" more than once in the first qtr. Then seemed to give up talking about it. Sorta like they might have been embarrassed to keep making the same point over and over.

This is something lots of us on this site have been saying for sometime. Against other teams (not just the Bamas and Ga.s, most teams) we just seem to be small and SLOW. It's been that way for sometime.

I want JG to succeed. But after watching him consistently fail to see any blitz much less disrupt the timing of any rush through diff cadences etc., then repeatedly just get killed under any amount of pressure, it makes me question why it keeps happening. It didn't when KC came in. KC changed up the snap count which is important since we dont need defenders getting perfectly timed jumps in addition to not being blocked. And he threw the ball away instead of taking a sack. What a concept. Teams are gonna blitz us all day if JG can't remedy this.

Maybe coach was concerned JG might transfer and thought it best to name him the starter to eliminate the thought of a transfer. Keller Chryst was never going anywhere, his only option was to stay the course or call his time over. Neither QB is head and shoulders above the other, we knew coming into the season we would need both.
I still believe the offense runs with a more fluid pace with KC in the game, when the coach has allowed him to pass the ball. The defense is also aware KC will pull it down and run it, watch the vids from Stanford.

Chances are good KC starts against the gamechickens, get behind him and the team.

It was a corner blitz.... how’s that on the left guard?

Edit: Granted thank goodness they took Carvin out because he was getting JG killed on 5 v 5 looks.
The blitzer was the LG's man. We had enough men to pick up the blitz on that side, but the OG couldn't get his man.

QB has to have a better feel of the pocket there, but it's not like the LG there had no part in the sack/fumble. He'll be catching some hell in the film room for that this week.

After several spot appearances in relief, I am changing my outlook on Chryst. There is more than a little merit to what the KC crowd has been saying. JG has the better arm but KC has better command of the offense, which may be a bigger determinant of who is most effective. KC absolutely is calmer, sees, the field better, and gets the offense into better sets it would seem. Even the run plays look smoother.

CJP makes the decision, of course, but I personally would like to see KC get a starting opportunity. If JG is even partially limited in the injuries he's taken in the past few weeks, handing KC the starting reins for USC wouldn't be a bad idea.

He had a great quarter. Didn't get blitzed the same and came in with no pressure down 28.

Great quarter and a worse performance in the second half than JG had in the first.

Did what the backup is supposed to do. Great, great job by Chryst.

Also tua didn’t grade well at all. Makes you wonder how much of his performance is based on unreal protection from te Oline and great separation by the receivers

A lot, that O line might be their best ever. WR's are great as well never dropping a catchable ball.

It's time to give KC a shot at a start next week, did you notice the playcalling was different with him in, I think the coaches trust him more, and he can do more than throw up 50-50 balls. If he fails next week then we still have JG, but the kid deserves a chance.

In regard to the JG and KC issue, clearly the obvious isn't. Hopefully it will become so after the Bama bashing.

Very mature at qb position, a wasted talent on the bench. Could be competing for the east with him at the helm. I never understood why bring a proven guy here unless you plan to start him. He was able to get the ball off. I know players changed throughout game but from her on out really serves us he makes the field anymore. We need to look to next season, bottom line. Agree?

Well, first, this is a team sport. No one person makes that much difference. This team is not capable of competing for the East, under any combination of players on the field. I hate that, but it's a fact of life. It will get better, in time.

But then, I'm not sure what you're proposing. Your wording is a bit confusing to me. Are you saying we need to stick with Guarantano because Chryst will be gone after this season (we need to "look to next season")?

I just don't know what, "from her[e] on out really serves us he makes the field anymore" means.
