The private vs. public education debate (split from QB thread)

Mom does not have to go to the PTA meeting to know how her child's education is going or to show she values education.

Very true, but there is still a major time crunch involved. There are a large number of people who are strictly into survival mode in this country.

This jumps racial bounds, but its socio-economically driven. Those people worry about meals and lights, first and foremost, and even that could be a legitimate challenge for some.

Education should be at the top of the list, but for many, sadly, it gets lost in the noise.

Excuses. Those don't work for me. Was raised by a single mom. If you value education, your kids will get it. She certainly had a tough go of it at times, raising 4 kids. Education never got lost in the "noise".

WOW 4 kids on her own WHEW.

I just wanted to jump in and give your mother some kudos. If I have to keep my kids by myself for a long weekend it is panic time.

:hi:

They probably stopped caring on a similar level as the individuals stopped caring. They supply the money...not sure how much more the congressman should do for a family on an individual level. The unions should be destroyed. However, they don't stop a family from educating their child if they truly value it.
I'm not in any way exonerating the families in the degradation process. Too many now view school as a 9 month childcare hiatus.

Family is the #1 culprit, period, but that's not something that can be addressed in the public forum. Teacher unions and sorry administration can.

Thanks. I have a soft spot for single moms.

And I know the feeling about keeping kids by yourself for a weekend, Vader. I only have one, and it wears me out if I have to watch over her myself for a day or two.
:)

Kudos to your mom,

But your mom probably came from an upbringing that valued education. Some people just ain't that lucky.

I would agree that its not the government's job to raise a kid. But children are the ultimate peer pressure demographic. If the school system is instilling values and personal growth in its students, more are soon to follow. And this has to start at the elementary level.

For every parent that doesn't value education, there are five that do. And those five kids can bring up that one buddy who isn't getting it from home, we have a positive net impact on society right there.

Hillary was right on one thing, it truly does take a village to raise a child. Parents and Grandparents (people that don't have a close relationship with their grandparents confuse me) have the largest role, but I learned lots of values from teachers, coaches, preachers, parents of friends, etc.

Agreed. But there is where I think the philosphy on how to fix these problems is failing. People seem to be looking more and more to the federal system to solve their problems. When in fact, they need to be doing the reverse. Local communities and strengthening of them is where it is really at. Churches, community groups, whatever. Need to be handled on a local level as much as possible.

Growing up, when we had a problem, I don't remember looking to the government for help. We looked to family and friends.

This is my one issue that I guess labels me as a liberal.

I hate the White Flight institutions (I refuse to call them Private Schools....many started right after integration for all the wrong reasons...lots of these places were founded in the late 1960's to mid-1970's.......HMMMMM).

They played an all-star role in killing the urban public school system in every fascet, all the way down to athletics in those areas. When the mayor's kids and the senator's kids stopped going to public schools, so did their concerns for what was going on there.

OK.....I get that! Point well taken. Politics sucks!

My alma mater was founded in the 1880's. Could have been based on what happened 20 yrs before (civil war). Ok.... not the BEST reason to start a school, but it has lasted and is a GREAT school. Actually a terrible reason to start one.......

TODAY..... it is about the best school for the individual. NO RACE ISSUES LIKE THE PAST! What school can get a kid into the best college possible? That is all that matters. If I can afford it, my kid WILL go to a private school!
