Because the receiving team would just fair catch it and get it at the 25. No difference.
Maybe I misunderstood. I was responding to using the punter to kick it if your at the 50. I was assuming he meant to boot the ball high and allow people to cover it pinning them deep. You can’t fair catch a squib/on side. It’s really the only call that makes any possible sense other than drilling it through the end zone. I don’t think we are too many years from the rules nazis ending kickoffs all together and you start on the 25. I think not knowing how to handle the desperation on side at the end of a game is the only reason it hasn’t happened yet.
I like the idea of a squib when you are kicking from the 50, but I also don’t blame any coach for taking the sure touch back. Especially if you have a lead.
Thought this when I saw the penalty. We never return kick offs. To quote Hillary, “What difference does it make?”Really a 15 yard penalty to be assessed on the kickoff the start of 2nd half is a nothing burger. Most all KO's are not returned anyway. The only way this could hurt is if the coach was ballsy enough to onside right after half but if you don't get it you put your 10 point lead in a vulnerable place. So in this case 13-03 game it was nothing. IMO.
I do hope UT had told there guys around the 35 yard line to Fair Catch if they try one of those bloop kicks.
