Plus, if it does use the hang time to calculate the height of your vertical, how does it factor in the forward motion? That will add or take away to the real height. It should be close, but not as accurate as they make out.
Nope. Forward motion is completely independent of vertical acceleration. With your hangtime, you can calculate exactly to tenth of an inch how high you got.
The only variable you can't account for is if you take off with your feet higher/lower relative to your center of mass than you landed. So assuming you jump with your legs straight, and land with your legs equally as straight, it's a 100% accurate calculation.
