The Official Tennessee @ Arkansas Fayetteville Super Regional Game 1 (Sat. June 7 5PM EDT) (ESPN)

The rain events are now much earlier today and tomorrow, but the expected total rainfall amount is higher -- 2.5 inches.

Guessing that means the weather moves out on Saturday around 3-4AM local time, giving their field ~12 hours to drain/become playable again. Should be enough time for the game to start on schedule

Just thought I would post a little recap on the Arkansas series last month. We did, of course, lose 2 of 3 on the road and it sort of felt that the Vols got manhandled the last 2 games, but that wasn’t the case at all.

Game two we had a crucial error which allowed 2 unearned runs to score or that game would have been tied at 6-all and be anybody’s game. Game three we lose 8-4, but again we had an error at an inopportune time and the Hogs capitalized. Tennessee gave up an astounding 9 walks in game 3, which also opened the floodgates as Arkansas had runners on the bases the whole game.

Doyle gave up 11 hits and 6 earned runs in just 4.2 innings in game 2. That won’t happen again, at least it would be surprising to most of us.

The point here is that we literally gave Arkansas two games that could have been Vol wins if not for sloppy baseball. We can win this series if we clean it up and play good baseball. We don’t have to play perfect by any means, but we do have to play clean baseball.

Almost forgot, we outhit the Hogs in both games we lost and each team had 15 hits in our opening win. GO VOLS!
Doyle was also still dealing with blister problems. That's obviously healed.

Will Heflin also mentioned a change in how long he keeps his hand in his glove before the pitch, surmising that he'd been tipping pitches. Arkansas hit his fastball like they were expecting it.
Interesting. I certainly didn't pick up on that. I did notice that his fastball didn't have the movement that it normally does.

Everyone had begun sitting on his fastball. I believe the belief was that out of 4-5 pitches per batter, let everything go until you see the FB. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that as the number of off-speed pitches increased, so did his uptick in success.

He did throw more FB’s the last 2 innings against Wake because we had a decent lead and Wake had not seen his stuff first-hand.

History is analog

Simply put, for the 24 years of the Super Regional era, Tennessee has REALLY good success in road super regionals.
And Arkansas has lost more super regionals than Tennessee has (by percentage and number)
And not only has Tennessee won super regionals on the road, they swept two and should have swept all three.
Arkansas has done well in Super Regionals. They have won four super regionals at home. But have only swept in their first one in 2004- Ironically against

2002 @ Clemson L 1-2
2004 Fayetteville W 2-0 (FSU)
2009 @ FSU W 2-0
2010 @ Az State L 0-2
2012 @ Baylor W 2-1
2015 Fayetteville W 2-1 (Missouri State)
2018 Fayetteville W 1-2 (South Carolina)
2019 Fayetteville W 2-1 (Ole Miss)
2021 Fayetteville L 2-1 (NC State)
2022 @ North Carolina W 2-0

Overall 16-10 (.615)
Road 7-5 (.583)
Home 9-5 (.643)

TENNESSEE
2001 @ East Carolina W 2-0
2005 @ Ga Tech W 2-0
2021 Knoxville W 2-0 (LSU)
2022 Knoxville L 1-2 (Notre Dame)
2023 @ Southern Miss W 2-1
2024 Knoxville W 2-1 (Evansville)

Overall 11-4 (.733)
Road: 6-1 (.857)
Home: 5-3 (.625)

In fact, the only super regional game the Vols ever lost on the road was the STUPID multi rain delay game #1 in Hattiesburg

The home crowd favors Arkansas, but DVH's teams nave struggled under their fan's pressure before.
Tennessee has thrived on the road. Tennessee outperformed on the road the last half of the season than at home actually as they were in real position to win a 2nd game in Fayetteville and Baton Rouge.

THE ONLY REASON THE VOLS ARE NOT HOSTING A SERIES THIS WEEKEND.
Timely defensive mistakes that have costs us nearly one win ever weekend.

Arkansas does not have strengths that have caused Tennessee problems this season. They are not a high-pressure base running team. They do not have a staff of "wily" pitchers that our fast ball hitting lineup can't hit.
Although less experienced, The Vols are marginally more talented than Arkansas

Should Tennessee win game 1, the hogs will be placed in a huge pressure cooker on Sunday.
Tony and Frank could sell out in game 2 with AJ, Arvy and Nate and not even risk a game 3

But the Vols CANNOT give up unearned runs and extra baserunners.

IMO this series comes down to walks and errors. Vols clean those up and I think they win. Seems simplistic, but I believe the Vols will outhit them straight up. It comes down to not giving stuff away…which has been the Achilles of this team through the year.

In Doyle's best last outings, I remember Redmond Walsh commenting that "his slider is really working."

Saturday's relative humidity should be the highest we've played in this year. How does saturated air typically effect pitches?

Don't forget about the awful balk call in the third game that led to the huge inning for Arkansas. Game was competitive until the ump decided to insert himself

From what I can recall, humidity has little effect on a baseball. Temperature would be the biggest variable, as it is for a golf ball. Unless someone else has anything substantially different, I don’t think humidity in itself is a big factor with a baseball.
