The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

I think most if not all,will. I'm nobody's fool.
Yeah, if LSU, UConn, Texas, South Carolina and programs like that come calling and they reject them then you’re kidding yourself. Also, “fools errand” is an expression. Teams that win championships in college sports in this era do so with experience /portal players.

And to be fair, he didn't discover Nate Oats. Bobby Hurley did, and hired him as an assistant. Oats simply promoted him when Hurley left. Credit to him for doing so, but it isn't exactly like he scoured the coaching ranks and plucked Oats out of anonymity.

And Danny White hired Bobby Hurley

I will point out one trend (at least so far). Because so many think Caldwell's system isn't good we haven't seen any big programs poach here.

Ayodele transferred to Grand Canyon
Avery Strickland transferred to Belmont
Destinee Wells transferred to UT Martin
Karoline Striplin transferred to Indiana

So that indicates another issue altogether.

And that hasn't exactly turned to gold at his only P4 job. Surprising he's lasted as long as he has at ASU. 10 seasons with 6 losing seasons and only 3 NCAAT appearance. One of those appearances was a F4 nine years ago, so he's drained that equity dry.

He hasn’t made a F4 at ASU has he? Totally forgot if he did.

Just saying the AD hired the coach that hired Oats so he approved of him twice basically...once to be an assistant for Hurley and then again to elevate him to replace Hurley. DW has a good process for hiring coaches and giving them the resources they need to do well.

Hurley won 67.7% at Buffalo and won 2 reg. season titles, a conf. tourney title and then NCAA appearance
Oats then won 69.1% at Buffalo and won 3 conf. tourney titles, 2 reg. season titles and made 3 NCAA appearances including 2 wins to reach 2nd round

Those are the only NCAA appearances in Buffalo history and those 2 hires account for every title except 1 reg. season title won by Reggie Witherspoon.

Perhaps giving him too much credit on the original hire. Approving of him isn't really a feather in the cap to the AD, but I digress. Not worth arguing over. We aren't changing each other's mind on Danny White based on Nate Oats.

Arizona State is or was a College Baseball school, football and basketball is there just for amusement for the fans...
