The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

Heck, he's a great coach. The "lucky" comment was crazy. I loved him while he was at UT but was also aware of his previous sleazy behavior before he came to UT. I wanted to believe he had learned from his previous behavior. My worst fears came true about him his last year here. It wasn't about the BBQ either. Nevertheless, his behavior left us in a terrible situation. Regardless of how much he loved it here, he's not an option when Barnes retires. If he would have done what he was directed to do after the BBQ, he might still be here. The narrative that the administration hung him out to dry is false. He hung his own self out to dry

Bruce owns the blame for his mistake. But the notion that Mike Hamilton did nothing to give more gas to the fire with his antics the night before our game vs Michigan in the tourney.

The most inept AD of this century 10000% owns part of the fallout that came after Bruce was fired.

Hamilton hired him and he rejuvenated the program, but he was hired because of Ernest G's influence

Tennessee is fortunate that we get to have these types of comparisons. My goodness the thought of having to compare 2 coaches at Tennessee in the last 20 years with the record of Pearl and Barnes. The horror!
Mears was a little of both, save the Pearl sleaziness

Barnes wouldn’t have had Brian Williams on his team or played his son meaningful minutes when he had a potential final 4 team, either. I actually can think a handful of Pearl guys that would’ve been able to play for Barnes. Maybe not even a handful. I’ll tell you one thing, Ramar Smith wouldn’t have been playing point in that 2007 OSU game. Who knows what he would’ve done with that team.

Rick would have given a big “heck no” if any of his assistants told him to sign Ramar Smith. Same for Brian Williams and a number of other Pearl signees. They’re as compatible with Rick as water is compatible with oil. For that, I’m thankful. It means more imo winning with guys who you don’t have go to bed at night hoping there are no overnight arrests.

Or we just got beat by a better team.

The ole "great regular season coach" label. Love it. We just advanced in one tournament farther than our chalk and and another right on chalk.

Silly label
sorry there was nothing about that game that indicated we got beat by a better team unless your qualifier as what is a better team is one that doesn't completely collapse offensively. Tennessee didn't even have to score their season average for points to win that game. that was a totally winnable game. They didn't get blown off the court like Alabama did by a clearly superior team. The gap in scoring was from our players being completely subpar and not up for the moment.

There was literally no reason anyone would predict Tennessee beating Houston other than our blind fanbase
Houston was easily the most beatable team of the four 1 seeds and it's not even close, even more beatable that Auburn. and UT beat Auburn and Florida this year.

Surely you noticed the intensity they had on defense that caused disruptions and short arms. We came out too tight. I can't imagine what Barnes did to cause it. I have no idea what he said that he shouldn't have said, or what he didn't say he should have said. Do you know ? Houston looked they were the superior team more so in the beginning than Duke did on Alabama.

It's 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Agree. It's so much more special when you like the guys on your team and you know they love this place and the fans, and have invested in the community. It's one reason why some of the tourney eliminations have been so hard, like Fulky's last game, Admiral's last game, JJJ and Santi, ZZ and Mashack. I genuinely care about and love these guys and each one of those guys has impacted my children's lives in a personal way. It's a beautiful thing. I want a final 4 more than I could possible articulate, but if I could choose to lose in the Elite 8 with these type of guys or go to the FF with some punks, then the choice is easy.

its easy to look superior when your opponent starts the game 1 for 12 shooting.

it's the equivalent of how Tennessee football makes second string Florida QBs look like Heisman candidates. total collapse.

More beatable than Auburn the team Tennessee beat 3 weeks ago and lost by 2 to at their place?
Houston scores far fewer points than Auburn does on average 169th in the country. Auburn, Florida and Duke are all top 10 offenses. Yes Houston has good defense but Tennessee didn't even have to meet their season AVERAGE for points to beat them. they scored 25 points below average which is a total collapse on Tennessee.

Raw points per game is an outdated metric that’s overly influenced by pace of play, which has been shown with decades of evidence to have little to no correlation to winning.

Tennessee and Houston were both in the top 20 in the country in offensive *efficiency* which removes the bias of pace.

Pearl took over a program that was returning Chris Lofton, CJ Watson, JuJuan Smith, Major Wingate, and Dane Bradshaw.

Barnes had Kevin Punter, Armani Moore, Robert Hubbs, Devon Baulkman, and Detrick Mostella returning and taking over for a previous coach that was fired for recruiting violations so he had to deal with that mess too.

The situations they were taking over were not even remotely close. Give Barnes a generational three point shooter, a future 10 year NBA vet, along with another very good shooter in Year 1 and I bet he would have great success too. That backcourt Pearl inherited was unreal.

this is an underrated point. for all of BuzzBall's flaws, Buzz did actually put together a solid roster for Pearl to walk into, and even he would've gotten to the tournament had he not been shown the door

Is it a different season if Cam Carr doesn’t transfer, JP is healthy, and D Stone isn’t a bust? As a fan who watched Jerry Green, Buzz, Martin, Donnie, I say be careful of what we wish for. Texas still hasn’t found a replacement for Barnes.
You left out Wade Houston those were some dreadful years. Either these posters that are unhappy are under 25 yo or they are on drugs and waking up in a different world everyday.

I think it highlights how terrible Peterson was here. I feel like at least 2 of his teams should have been NCAAT teams based on talent. I think Pearl definitely did way more than Peterson ever would have but he inherited a decent team.
