I believe I saw where a driver has to stay in the top 30 in the drivers' points to be eligible. So they would still have to show up every week.

But not much more than that.

I guess one cool element this does add is that it gives smaller, underfunded teams a chance to make the Chase by winning at Daytona or Talladega.

Points would set the rest of the field. As for the 17 winners scenario, I would imagine the lowest ranked drivers points wise would get dropped. However the 16th position is reserved for the points leader if he/she doesn't have a win.

I don't care so long as it's entertaining. I don't go to NASCAR for purity. Hell I don't even go to f1 for purity anymore. I just want a good show, fast cars, and my drivers winning.

On second hand, this is really stupid. So Jimmie Johnson can go win all of the first 35 races, but if he DNF's the last race, he is out? That seems to reward pure luck instead of consistent work.

Like I said earlier, I'm waiting on the controversy that results when a driver spins out another driver, on purpose, and on the last lap to steal the championship. Or for another scenario, Junior is coming to two to go at Homestead and is in position to win his first ever championship and blows a tire late and loses. Could you imagine the back lash that would result?

I really wish their was a driver's union where they could bargain against dumb crap like this.


I would be okay if they reset the points in the chase halfway through. But to make one race to decide it all is a joke.

The spin situation wouldn't bug me too much, as the offender would have to own their actions. That said, its NASCAR, and they're happy to edit results and apply new rules retroactively, which adds to the joke.

Your second scenario is what bugs be, its a sport where dumb luck, or lack thereof, plays a significant role. Derrike Cope spins and wrecks you? Sorry, come back next year! The 36 race scoring allowed for **** beyond a team's control to happen and still afford a chance to overcome

I hope USA today/ESPN/AP just makes their own rankings systems and then we can just speculate who won it all despite the new system.

Agreed.

I've said many times NASCAR is absolutely the worst sanctioning body in all of professional sports.
