The OFFICIAL DUKE/UNC B-BALL THREAD 2019/2020 (BETTER, FASTER, STRONGER THAN EVER)

yes but I was there in 68-72...loved sitting behind Frank McGuire when he coached at SCjr
I wasn’t around for that, but I did love hearing Art Heyman talk about the classic Duke / UNC brawl and how he hit Frank McGuire in the nuts.

yes...the Dookies and Heels used to have some epic wars....I watched York Larese cold-cock a Blue Devil in the early 60's. i visited a podiatrist in Lenoir City a few years ago and he told me that he played for Dean in his early years..we talked ACC b-ball for about an hour before he even started the exam....being a Wolf Packer myself, he had more fun than I did!!! LOL

That’s pretty cool, I’ve always enjoyed the old school ACC stories.

I’ve got a fun State Jimmy V story:

My parents used to be involved a lot with the Duke Children’s Classic. There were a lot of celebrities involved in the golf tournament and tennis tournament, all benefiting Duke Children’s Hospital. Jimmy V was almost involved and one night at one of the dinners my mom called to check on me ( I was like 9 or 10) . Jimmy V walked by her and asked her who she was talking to and she told him . So he asked to talk to me, asked me how the hell I was doing and talked to me for a couple minutes about how I should become a State fan and quit being a Duke fan. He was awesome, couldn’t have been nicer. Just the way you’d expect him to be plus a few cocktails, he was full of energy. That’s something I’ll always remember .

A Vol Fan and Pack fan? Man you must be a glutton for punishment... 😁 I don’t know how you do it.

that's a great Jimmy V story...i kinda morphed into a UT fan of sorts when I moved to Bristol in 73 and both of my kids are UT grads...a few years ago when UT and State played in the season opener I was pulled both ways...living in Murvul now makes it a little easier to pull for UT but as I get older (70), sometimes I really don't care a lot! 'rather visit the Grands

I’m kind of the same way. Obviously you know how it is growing up a State fan or an old school ACC fan, basketball is king. That’s pretty much how it was with me until I went to a UT football game. I was always a Tennessee fan, and a devoted fan because my family was from East Tennessee, Johnson City and Unicoi, but growing up 5 minutes from Duke’s campus, having season tickets, developing relationships with people at Duke and being a decent basketball player made it my favorite sport and team. Then I went to UT/Notre Dame in 1999 and really started getting into it, and then I went to the 2001 LSU game at Neyland and I was hooked. It was like a switch flipped and unfortunately for the people of this board I’ve never been the same. I got my grades in order, transferred to UT, met my wife there, graduated and the rest is history.

I wouldn’t mind living in Murvul at some point myself. I always enjoyed driving over there when I was in Knoxville.

I’m assuming y’all are talking about Maryville. I’ve got kin there. It’s a nice little town. I like it there.

UVA uglies up CBB like no other school not named Wisconsin.

Defense and uncalled double dribbles win championships, but damn it’s painful to watch.

Duke is literally getting worse with each game
Yep. Regressing each game. The bench has become awful. O’Connell, Jack White, DeLaurier, Baker and Hurt are not performing. Duke would’ve easily won if any of those guys could make a shot to stretch the D, but UVA just played their pack line and uglied up the damn game.

Moore has some nice handles but can't finish to save his life. He couldn't throw the ball in the ocean. This whole freshmen class needs to return.

Zion is must-watch TV. I've never seen somebody under 6' 10" get such easy buckets. The Lakers had no answers. This is like Shaq/D12 territory. Even when the shots are well contested, he is such a good finisher (power and finesse).

There’s no true leader. Jones is a great ball handler, but he lacks the leadership to guide the team and keep them focused. White, O’Connell, DeLaurier, Hurt, Baker, etc are the most inconsistent group in recent memory. Goldwire is a great defender, but he’s not improved at all since he showed up. Carey, Stanley and Moore just don’t have the desire. Plain and simple. All three are immensely talented, but they don’t care enough. They just want to get to the nba

I’ll add, that if you can’t get yourself pumped up to give It your all when you put on a Duke/Kentucky/UNC/Kansas type jersey, I question your ability to get yourself up to do it when you get to the NBA
