The Official Dan Mullen Thread

After Mullen is hired you haters will be pissed for 10 minutes then buy in after his press conference. Book it

Another Dan Mullen excuse

There is so many excuses for why Dan Mullen doesn't win. It's crazy

And that's what some of you want at Tennessee.

Really? There are two main reasons why Mullen doesnt win at a higher rate and they are both valid. The most important is the SEC west. Literally the most powerful division for multiple years. Its extremely difficult to win at a high rate when you face guys like Saban, Malzahan, Sumlin and Miles every year. Secondly, is recruiting. Whether you or anyone else want to admit it or not, Mullen is a recruiting black hole. He has very little pipelines to great recruiting states and MSU is near the bottom of the SEC in recruiting budget.

None of those are excuses. They are just facts. I am not saying I want Mullen, but trying to say facts are excuses is just disingenuous.

You think Mullen could take TN to the SEC championship game 3 out of his first 5 years and win the SEC in two of them? Umm, k?

I don't think any coach we get (save unrealistic options like Saban or Meyer) is likely to win the SEC twice in the next 5 years. I honestly doubt UGA can do that either, and they seem like they made a great hire in Smart. But I absolutely think Mullen would have us in the thick of things every year.

He lost to South Alabama last year...

There is no reason for a good coach at a SEC school to do that in year 8

It's not what the coaches that leave say...

Just like Butch impossible to work for

Link to said quotes or I'm calling BS.

His last DC, Manny Diaz, left to return home to Miami (his father was a former Miami mayor), and said at the time that it would take a situation like that to leave MSU. The DC prior to Diaz was Geoff Collins, and he left to take the DC job in Gainesville, which paid more and gave Collins more national exposure (which got him the HC job at Temple).

But if you have links to quotes, please provide.

How many times must it be pointed out that Mississippi St. is not your average SEC school? I swear, Saban could leave Bama and go coach at Kentucky and some of you guys would start saying he's overrated when he ends up with the same amount of wins as every other Kentucky coach.

Utban Meyer got blown out by unranked Iowa, with a roster that has NFL talent in year 6. Hugh Freeze beat Nick Saban. Stop with that BS. Upsets happen. And they happen to the best of them.

In his 6th year Mullen beat 3 top 10 teams in a row.

I'll say this. I'm not sure he wouldn't be the best coach in the East. Now that isn't saying much cause the current crop of coaches in the East are mediocre at best. So him winning the East in years 2,3, and 5 wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.

Now, once in the SECCG, he'd probably lose to Bama. But so did Richt the two chances he got. BTW, those two appearances are really all he did in the latter 70% of his tenure there. Ya know... The part that you conveniently neglected to mention.

I think Mullen is a good coach. I really don't understand why I don't want him at Tennessee......but I don't. Would certainly like him over many of the low tier type coaches.....but as a lifetime fan for some reason I want and expect more.

I would not be butt hurt by the hire but I would not love the hire until I saw some on field success. No presser could ever changed mind.......as they are just words and something to get people excited about.....I only become excited by results......if I were not already excited.

If he becomes the coach I want him to be successful and I will be hoping I jump on the train sometime next season........until then I'll wait and listen......and hope for the best.

Again Freak. Why are folks allowed to come in here and talk down on Mullen? This is a pro Mullen thread? Ban them all as you would in the Gruden thread.

Why would ANY thread not be up for debate.......unless someone was harassing folks? Freak said "debate" was fine in the Gruden thread.

i get that.

I think people are really discounting Mullen's success at State, NO ONE has won at State. Hes getting those results at Mississippi State not some MAC, ACC or Big East school. And he's doing all of this with very limited resources, his recruiting budget is only 400K a year to put that in perspective Tennessee's was 1.3 million last year.

Great point.

I am down to Frost or Mullen as the two attainable coaches I think we will see. I think Currie is all in on Frost but has serious competition in UF and Nebraska. I think Mullen is option 1A. As others have stated he has done more with less and has a high ceiling imo with the right resources. State won't match what we can pay and UT is a big step up for him.

I just hope we do not have to move down the list from these options.

BluetickWhiskey I’m not going to continue to derail this thread. If you want to discuss moderating I’ll be happy to have that conversation by email, but not here.

I shouldnt have even interjected. I regret it. I blame lack of sleep from rumor chasing.
