Good comparison. Nick Saban lost to Croom his first year at Bama. Mullen lost to Jones in year 8.
In a complete total rebuild year after losing tons of starters.
They also lost 3 times last year on the last play. Regardless of opponent they were an inept team. MSUs offense last year was worst than ours this year Under butch.
Honest question, do you not see a significant difference between last years MSU squad and this years?
One of my closest friends is a MSU alum and donor (not a major booster) but I was asking him about Mullen's ability to recruit. Obviously, Starkville is no happening city, but neither is Tuscaloosa, Auburn, or Oxford, and those schools have had much better success recruiting. I'm not saying he should consistently be pulling Top 10 classes to MSU, but he's NEVER had a top 15 class and only once has had a class better than #25. Most of his classes have ranked in the 30's.
He said Mullen doesn't have a reputation of being a great recruiter. It's not his strong suit. That said, he does seem better at developing talent. Do you think he would recruit better here, or that he would HAVE to surround himself with elite assistants with strength in that area?
Whoever gets hired I sincerely hope the next time we go through a coaching search that Gruden is too old to be brought up again, that guy plays, loves the attention and nothing more. If he were to come I would gladly eat crow however I think its the same old song and dance. And the ones lashing out in this thread are the ones who fully jumped on the Gruden train and they're just not going to be satisfied with anyone else. However winning cures all, time will tell.
Sorry I don't want a coach that has to "rebuild" in year 9. That sounds ridiculous. It'd be like people wanting to keep Butch Jones and calling his year 5 a rebuild year. Yeah, no thanks.
