The Official Dan Mullen Thread

Here are some of my major hangups on Mullen:
* Last year he went 6-7
* Lost to South Alabama last year
* Lost to Kentucky last year
* Unimpressive (close) wins against UMass last year and this year
* Inability to win big games (record against ranked teams)

"But he's at Mississippi State" does not explain losses to South Alabama and Kentucky. It does not explain the close games with UMass. He clearly should be beating those teams soundly.

Not that it matters to the powers that be, but, i dont particularly like mullen because he runs that crappy spread junk. I dunno maybe i am butched out.

This.

A homerun, explosive hire doesn’t mean an equal trade-off. Currie would never do this to himself or our program. Anyone who wants Mullen has forgotten, or never knew, what being successful at Tennessee means or looks like. Mullen should not be a Top 5 candidate or even 10.

You didn't offer a single reason to support your statement other than some UT fans don't remember what UT being successful was like, which has zero implications for how Mullen might do at UT.

now that's fair. and why he's not #1, or maybe even #2, on most people's lists.

also fair. i find myself also wanting to get back to a much more physical style of offensive football.

that said, i think Butch's system is a low bar to be used when considering other spread systems.

Why do we want Dan Mullen?

for me, it's not that i want Dan Mullen. it's that it may wind up being him. and if it is, how do we find a path for him to be successful here?

and there is one, and i think he could do well here.

but it takes a little deeper of a look than "he's only finished in the top 25 twice, don't want".

I did. I posted his record against ranked teams that was tweeted out by ESPN College Football as “Not Great”. Tennessee, in this current state of the program, doesn’t go after a coach like this. See Hunt’s and Grand’s for more reasons.

Not a Mullen fan: however we should not base the coach we want
Or don't based off of one season......if that coach has a lot of resume to look at.
I'm not a huge fan based from his ranked match up win/loss and how his teams have lost to inferior teams in multiple seasons.

However It is undeniable Mullen is a good coach, he has done wonders at MSU, and is a good talent developer.

I could get on board with Mullen but would prefer a few others.......who I would be excited about.

The only prob is everyone I would be excited about May not live up to expectations.....but with Mullen I would have no doubt he would get Tennessee to 9 wins maybe more almost every season......yet I'm still looking for a more exciting coach pic .........maybe dreaming but wanting Tennessee to get back to 90's level.

Dis’ what we want in Knoxville? Like really?

:eek:lol: oh hell no. we should definitley let 1 qtr, in 1 game determine our next coach. cause you know, that make sense.

i can see it now...they're having a meeting with the BOT and there's John Currie, standing in the middle of a round table meeting with a thumb pointed sideways and says "what say you?"

lol.

I mean his record against top 25 teams over the past 9 years could also be used. But I figured this was a microcosm of his career there.

Yes. I do not get the obsession with Dan Mullen. It’s not like Miss State is a terrible program. He has top 25 classes

Yeah because his body of work is so much more impressive. SMDH

I don't think we would be holding this stuff over him if he was at Colorado, and that's basically the level Mississippi State is without him. It was a pretty terrible program. The fact that he has top 25 classes is a tribute to him recruiting people to come to the middle of nowhere in a terrible state like Mississippi and not a statement about how mediocre he is.

Having said that, I'd be cool with Frost instead if we give a little buyout so we could hop on someone more proven if his ceiling ends up being lower than it looks.
