It's play calling. Too many passes behind the line of scrimmage. Too many runs off tackle with 8 in the box. Not enough downfield passing when the defense isn't respecting the pass. Dobbs isn't a great passer, but he's also not being put in the best situations. But look what happens when he is. Huge TD pass way down field to Malone.

Passes down the field will be nonexistant if we cannot pass block, which if tonight is any indicator, we can't.

You dobbs haters are stupid as hell. There are worse aspects of our offense and play calling, that needs to be quickly addressed before bristol.

True Dobbs isn't our only problem area on offense, but if you've watched many games from the past two years then there's no way you can justify thinking Dobbs is anything more than a stand in.

This forum is so blind on many things, but more blind to the QB situation. I'm all for backing the players on the field, but that doesn't mean you can't recognize a continual problem area over multiple seasons.

Our biggest problems on offense are O-Coach, and a QB that is decent, but not championship caliber. And if championship status isn't the goal then there's no point of playing. Then lastly our HC who will, when given the chance being up on a decent team, will try to ride the game out. Then ultimately wear our defense out from being on the field all game. Hopefully he's changed, but sorry for not just believing he has like many. I tried last year and it burned me many many times. And many thought he turned the corner against UG, but he didn't. As long as the opponent is firing back and keeping the game close , or ahead of us then it forces HC to keep the foot on the gas rather than idle. Everytime we scored against Alabama last year I was wanting Alabama to counter. We needed the game close so that HC didn't lax up. It just didn't work out in the end that time.

Mark my words, our running backs(Hurd) will get injured if we continue to rely on him as much as we have. The passing game has to be there to open the field up for the run. I was pleasantly surprised he held up so well last year.

I'm tired of everyone seeing one or two decent passes out of a handful of bad and believe he's a superstar. Just because you have experience doesn't mean you are the most qualified.

And to be fair, I like Dobbs the guy. He's a hell of a VFL! But that doesn't mean he's automatically the best suitor.

Not a hater. Just stating the fact he played pretty bad tonight. Not accurate on throws, ran into the pass rush numerous times and did not see the field well at all. He looks worse than last year. And by the way, I'm pretty smart. Thanks.

I'm referring to those who would rather dobbs warm the bench. And I agree he did not look very good, but that could be said about quite a few players. Just glad that game is over and a reality check to Butch and Co.

Appy is no slouch they gave us all they had and we got lucky. I hope that the guy's learned not to stroke each other cuz nothing is handed to you

I really am shocked by both. And those aren't things you fix during the season. So much athleticism, but disorganized. No confidence. And unable to perpetuate a drive against a team you dominate physically. Really odd.

I was thinking that UT would be the team to beat in the East this season. While I believe that App St. is a pretty good football team, they're not SEC. UT's offense is not a championship caliber team. And the defense is not good enough to carry them. I think UT loses 3 SEC games and will be 1-1 after Va. Tech.

They just want to punch him in the face.

Lol you people are killing me. We're going to be fine. App state is a very good team,it's not like we played a push over. I doubt we really drop in the polls. We won. If we had lost, I could see us dropping, but we won. On the record it won't say 1-0 (but they sucked, might as well be 0-1.) it will say, 1-0. That's all. Next weekend is a different ball game. Go vols!!

McNabb and 'Cuse would crush both teams on the field tonight. To compare this bunch to the 98 Vol squad is nuts.

Not comparing teams all. Season openers can be surprising and also something to build on was my point. Nice to see the team pull out a late victory after last season . We are not the hype or top 10, lots of work to do.

I pray the rest of the season plays out better. However, if Appy St can stop Dobbs, I fear everyone else will take notice and capitalize.

Hunker down Vol fans
