The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

you shoot that p365 yet?
I bought one a few months ago, the XL. First trip to the range was this past Saturday. Very nice at self defense ranges. The clerk on the retail side told me that they cannot keep the Hellcat or the P365XL in stock and they still have not received any of the P365 carry editions with the sight inset into the back of the slide. One or two more trips to the range an I'll start using it for EDC.

Didn't know about the XL - love my reg 365. Now you got me looking dammit

Hey wise ones. I’ve decided to add an AR-15 to my collection. It will be my first rifle as I only own handguns (Glock 26, Sig P238, SFA 1911 45 Tactical). I’m a newby so probably looking for a fully assembled gun, and won’t spend more than $1,000 - $1,500 on it. I’m not a hunter so main use will be plinking, home defense and the random zombie apocalypse. From what I’ve already read 223/5.56 appears to be the best caliber. I’ve got plenty of time here as I’ll probably buy it in March of next year. Any best times of the year to buy? What other advice should I heed? Obviously I’ll read the threads just looking for lessons learned and key must haves. Thanks.

Im SUPER pissed.

Picked up the upper and lower today. The buffer retainer detent was broken. The buffer itself is damaged (I assume from the detent being broken). Waiting to hear back from Aero Precision. Not a very good first impression though

Well...some here will tell you that I'm qu**r for Colt, and that there are other just as good or better options out there.

Guilty, and they are correct. That being said, when I took the plunge into the AR market, I wanted a gun that was well-built; accurate; and would go "bang" every time I pulled the trigger. For me, that ruled out a build, so I did my research online and with friends who owned AR's, and ended up with a Colt 6721 (HBAR). From there, it was an Aimpoint PRO, Geissele SSA, TLR-1HL, B5 stock (Thanks GV), Magpul sling, and Raptor CH to turn what was a clunky old Colt into a solid duty / HD gun.

And then I bought another one. And now it looks like I'm about to own a 6933. Sigh.....

Colt is a solid choice, but you'll eventually want to change out the trigger, at least. I'd look at the 6920 or the 6921 for starters. Get a Gunbroker.com account, if you don't already have one. Every now and then, a good deal pops up. I like RAT Worx, out of Illinois. Yes, Illinois.

And there are many, many other just as good if not better choices out there. Matter of personal preference, and budget.

Go get on AR-15.com. That's as good a place as any to do some research and see what others are saying.

Let me know when you're ready to talk HD ammo. Not cheap, but the Federal 62 grain bonded JSP (XM556SBCT) is one of, if not the top rated barrier blind round for 5.56. Sometimes hard to find, and around a buck a round, but when it comes to a round that will penetrate and still expand reliably, worth every penny. Not like you're going to plink with it, right?

Good luck, and have fun with it.

Shipping damage, or flawed product?

I love my 365. I looked at the XL but the reg 365 is a great conceal gun. I bought the extended mag. I can carry it in my pocket and you cant tell I have it. That is if I have on cargo pants or shorts. It is a sweet shooting gun.

The broken "nipple" was in the box so I assume shipping damage. Aero has been very helpful in getting it fixed.

PS, don't use FedEx ground

Yeah, it's a coin toss on ground shipping. I've had good and bad luck with both FedEx and UPS. Just deal with it and move on. The response of the vendor is more important, IMO. Hope it works out for you.

On another note, you see 81Bubbavol's post about getting an AR? I chimed in, but he'd probably benefit from your input more so than mine. Maybe GV will stop by as well.

And...if I win the bid on the 6933, I'm probably going to duplicate what I did with my HD AR as far as add-ons. You got any advice on that angle? FYI, this will become my go-to Patrol / HD long gun. I already cleared it with the S.O. As long as I have the ATF stamp, I'm good to go.

I missed it, but I'll go take a look.

Remind me what you did with that one and I'll throw in my 2 cents

If you’re willing to spend $1500, go a little further and get a Daniel Defense. You won’t have to spend any money upgrading it

I’d be pissed too. I’ve never seen that type of failure.

I've owned a few ARs in my day.

If you can find a KAC Sr-15 I'd lean that way, though it will be at the higher end of the price range.

FN, Colt, BCM, DD

So from my limited research, it's either A, bad luck with that part or B, the lower was milled incorrectly.

My guess would have been the extension tube wasn’t screwed in far enough and the bolt damaged it.

It was just the complete lower, no upper (purchased separately), so no bolt.

And I checked the buffer tube, it looked to be correct.

Let's help him avoid any early mistakes we made, if we did.

Daniel Defense is top-shelf, but talking to warfighters from the 3rd ID just north of me, more gun than anyone will ever need. Save the grand on the base price, and put it towards a quality RDS and light.

Springfield. Can't go wrong.

Colt. Pick what suits your needs, understanding that the MilSpec trigger absolutely has to go. An SSA or SSA-E completely changes a Colt. Trust me on that point.

For HD ammo, I told him all he needs to know. Research DocGKR, and his exhaustive testing on 5.56 loads, and the XM556SBCT is the best among a number of great choices. Dial in on that round, then practice and plink with the cheap stuff. "Where you hit" only counts when where you hit really counts. Zero for MPBR (50 yards), and you're good from 0 to 200 yards, +/- 3 inches either way. Forget MOA, think "MOM" (Minute of Man). Anything center mass with that round, plus or minus 3 inches, is a fight-stopper.

And Go Vols.

Thanks guys. Great info. I'm 50 pages into this wonderful thread and have learned a lot. Took my guns to the range today and rented a cheap AR to shoot. It was a Diamondback with a low profile gas port and iron sights. Got me used to the platform but definitely want a better gun. Had one FTE and had a round hang up in the breach. Man I love shopping for guitars and guns . The hunt is almost as fun as the prize at the end.

Honestly if its a "mil-spec" AR, you're pretty much paying for the name. Unless you get into the uber price range (Noveske, KAC, etc), and even then the "average joe" isn't good enough to matter.

PSA is a quality product. I honestly would have bought their AR-10 except I wanted an FDE rifle finally (yes I understand I can pay to get it painted, but I want it ready to go right away).

Love my PSAR15. Zero issues with it thus far.
