The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

I did own a RR to start with. Bought a completed upper. Then a empty lower.

One thing that was useful for me was the YouTube videos showing assembly. Seems like YouTube has banned them.

If he's in Knoxville or close by I might be persuaded to sell him one of my 23. 😊

I'm always running g through there working or going to look at barns.

Not sure if you would try to whip me after all the Swiss cake roll joked I have made though. Haha.

I even considered buying one of the incomplete lowers that you finish drilling the holes on because the fact that the gubment won't know anything about it appeals to me. But I don't know anyone with one of the jigs to finish completing it.

I've avoided those 80% lowers for two reasons:

You can get completed lowers for less.
Guns are only traceable to the original buyer.

You can get a Anderson lower, about all I've used, for $39 if you wait for them to go on sale.

Let me check my stock to see if I've got one I can part with. I will have to add on the Swiss cake roll surcharge.

What are you guys thoughts on the Piston driven cycling systems on AR's versus the normal gas system?

I have read that they are more reliable and less prone to jam.

I made a post about it somewhere, not sure which thread specifically. Regardless, the idea they are "more reliable" is a myth. If one builds a direct impingement AR with quality parts, it'll run just fine. Properly oiled and feed it good ammo and you likely won't ever have a problem outside of parts breaking.

Piston systems are expensive as well as not having a set industry standard. Everyone has some differences in their designs so no two parts (generally speaking) are interchangeable. I have one, like it, but it's no more "reliable" than my standard ones.

I've never owned one. My brother bought one and spent close to $3000 for his. I'd rather have six gas guns :). His does run cleaner in the action than mine as one would expect.

Got some quality time with my HD AR today. I'm working next week, and we have firearms qualifications, so I figured I'd brush up on my technique. Few things I noticed through several different 5.56 loads:
- I'm zeroed at 50 yards (MPBR) with the Federal 62gr JSP (556SBCT). This is my default HD/Patrol load. Even shooting from a K-Zone rest, this is maybe 1-2 MOA ammo. It just doesn't want to seem to "dial in" at any one spot.
- In comparison, the Federal 55gr FMJ shoots very tight groups (~ 1 MOA), but approx. 1 inch high and 1 inch right of where the Federal 62gr zero is set.
- Likewise, the IMI 69gr SMK round is drilling 1 MOA (or less) holes about where the 55gr rounds are landing. For whatever reason, my 1/9 loves the 69gr round, and I am becoming a huge fan of IMI ammo. Very consistent POI.

I debated resetting my zero to the 55gr / 69 gr POI, but since the JSP's are my default load, and 1 inch down and left is not much of an adjustment at 50 yards, I decided to leave well enough alone. At roughly .80/round, I can't afford to be chewing up those 62gr SBCT's to chase my zero all over the 10-ring.

Maybe I should start a GoFundMe page.....

Should I make him spend more money?

You've cost me a bit, but I'm pretty pleased with where I ended up.

I am, however, surprised you didn't tell me about IMI ammo. SGAmmo carries it, and from what I've seen, it's better than the Federal "XM" loads. The IMI 69gr SMK round is laser-guided...at least for me.

Israelis take that shooting stuff pretty serious. Midway has the 5.56 on sale pretty regularly.

I too have been looking at entry level ARs. Has anyone tried the Smith and Wesson M&P 15 sport 2? I have been finding them for around $500.

I never really used any IMI stuff personally. Just saw good reviews on it. I'm partial, as are my rifles, to the Prvi Partisan stuff. Accurate, cheap and reliable.

However, money wise, you should try this when it comes back in stock. Just try it for accuracy sake.

You’re welcome.

Go to Primary Arms or Palmetto State Arms. You’ll find plenty of options in or under $500.

The link up thread lead me to Primary Arms. I found mostly stuff I hadn't heard of, and the internet can't give the slightest consensus on. The S&W is a know brand. Is it bad? Is there a better choice in that price range? I was hoping for some input on where to start, beyond the obvious.

Have one and love it. It was my first AR and it hasn't given me one problem since I've owned it. Not a lot of "better" choices in that range but a lot of different brands and features.

Edit: misread part of your post.
