It's going to kick like a mule in an SBR and the bullet will tumble like a brick after about 100 yards or so. Also ammo is expensive.

If you're planning to kill stuff up close, it will definitely make a big hole.

ETA... The recoil on that round can be hard on many lower parts and many optics.

I was reading up on it and evidently the caliber was designed for the 556 lower and the only modifications were obviously, the barrel, BCG, and a larger opening in the upper had to be enlarged or purchase a 458 SOCOM upper receiver. The 556/223 mags will work in single stack configurations.

If I were to do it it would be for select hunting situations, definitely under 100 Yards, for large game.

I thought I read where the round is best suited for a 16" barrel but a shorter barrel down to 12.5" had a minimal effect on muzzle velocity. As to the kick, I wondered about that. I shoot a 7mm MAG in bolt configuration and can't believe it would be worse than that.

The cost however is a concern at $2.00 plus per round. I noticed some of the other larger bore in the AR15 formats are much less expensive.

All of that is accurate. You get very little advantage in muzzle velocity from longer barrels with that round..... but a longer, heavier barrel helps control the violence of the recoil. Getting the right gas tube is important.

Yea, I could do that, no problem. I've been searching the internet for the requirements for different SBR uppers on a stamped lower. The opinions are all over the place. I can't find anything on the ATF site. The general consensus is that you are good to go with any SBR upper as long as it's on a stamped lower. Some say you need to send a letter to the ATF to append the stamp. I've called a local FFL and he says you're good to go with any SBR upper. I've emailed the ATF to get a clarification. What have you heard?

Whatever part has the serial number is the rifle. I can't imagine (especially on an AR platform) that changing uppers makes any difference. If it's registered in 5.56 and you kept that upper to be reassembled whenever down the road you still have the components per your form. If the ATF wanted to inspect it you slap it together and hand it over.

According to the lawyer that had that blog said that technically you should send a letter to the ATF listing the new upper but there was no penalty if you didn't.

Building a AR pistol. Going to run a Spikes pistol buffer and either a 10.5 or 11.5 barrel with a carbine length gas tube. Any issues with that setup?

I've found that the 223 is very forgiving. Mist if the issues I've had were with other calibers. Gas block alignment is the mist challenging part.

Took delivery of this Milt Sparks 1AT holster yesterday. This design is typically made only for the 1911 pistol. However this one is for the P-35 Browning Hi Power. The fit and overall construction is typical Milt Sparks top notch quality. MS continues to be my go to holster maker, when it comes to leather holsters.

Grand, never did get your thoughts on the 458SOCOM in SBR configuration. One concern based on the previous poster's comments is the wear and tear on the lower. I wouldn't want to bust up my Stamped SBR lower. Is that a concern? My other concerns, pointers?

Milt Sparks is good stuff. The VM2 is my personal favorite IWB holster.

Indeed. I still have my first concealed carry holster and belt from when I first started carrying 20+ years ago. It’s a Sparks belt and summer special holster for the 1911. Tony Kanaley and his team have their stuff together.

I don't know anybody that had damage to the actual receiver but many that had parts rattled loose. Also these were hog hunters that put many rounds down range and frequent rapid fire.

I'll also admit that I'm recoil sensitive and that thing is way to manly for me.:)

Thanks for your input. I appreciate all the pointers I get from members on here. Hopefully I can return the favor sometime. Your friends must have been wealthy. AT $2.00 per round I doubt I'll be stressing my lower very much. :)
