The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

I'm looking at the 42 & 43. I like the power of the 9mm but the 42 is smaller and would be easier to carry, and it's $120 cheaper. Still waffling though, but I guess six 380 hollow points would do just fine if I really needed them.

Have you compared the G42 & G43 side-by-side? I agree the G43 is a little bigger, but I personally don't think it's enough to make a difference. We're talking only a slightly bigger frame, but they're very close width wise. Of course, the difference in cost is always a valid consideration.

As for .380 v 9mm....well, that always boils down to preference. There has been study after study comparing the "stopping" power of the two rounds, and there are as many different outcomes as there have been studies. It just boils down to what you prefer. I will say, though, the FBI and a lot of police agencies across the nation are returning to the 9mm as their round of choice. Most are returning to the 9mm from the .40cal, but the 9mm seems to be the current trend for various reasons.

I suggest going to a local gun store that "rents" each of the models and compare your personal shooting ability between them. What really matters is how effectively YOU can manipulate the firearm, gain target acquisition/re-acquisition, and get rounds down range and into the bad guy safely.

Oh, I would compare the cost of ammo too. Sometimes the difference in the models can be made up in ammo costs over a little bit of time... Just my .02 though....

I've got several cops that are friends and here they are all going to .45 cal.

I'm definitely not saying EVERY police agency is going to 9mm, just a lot. I know the FBI is, and the Kentucky State Police is, too. It's usually "trendy" for local and state agencies to follow the lead of the FBI. KSP went from .357 to 10mm to .40cal, and now they're going to 9mm. I believe the KSP is making the move based on studies and decisions of the FBI. KSP should be transitioning to the 9mm starting around Spring 2017.

You are correct the 6.5G is designed as a long range round. However...

It is designed as a long range round that fits into a standard AR15 platform, thus limiting overall weight. Nobody had every made an AR15 into an effective 1000 yard rifle that wasn't a complete hog like an AR10, but still offered far better ballistics than the 5.56 at those ranges.

The problem with the 6.5G (IMO of course) is the fact it came out around the same time as the 6.8 and was "competing" with it to an extent. The major hiccup was the fact the designer, Bill Alexander, controlled it very closely as opposed to the 6.8 that had a lot of industry support starting off. And the 6.8 was developed by a couple of guys from the Army Marksmanship Unit, so it had a feather in it's cap starting off. In reality, the 6.8 had some pretty good backing out of the gate than the 6.5 until it finally went SAAMI spec. But all in all, the 6.8 focused more on terminal ballistics while the 6.5 focused more on external ballistics. Both are going to be better than the 5.56 at range, but it almost comes down to a matter of personal preference. In vehicle parlance:

The Mustang steers better, but the Camaro has better acceleration. Both are going to get you to the grocery store.

It comes down to what you want to achieve. The 6.8 is completely fine within a 500 yard range. The 6.5G outshines it over and above those distances. The 6.8 has better industry support at the moment, but the 6.5 has some dandy rounds in it's own right.

I will definitely do some more research before I decide. I may start with the lower so that I have even more time to evaluate both rounds. I may even take InVol's advice and build two uppers....lol.

I will say, the hardest part, so far, in deciding to build a rifle is deciding on which parts. There are so many options and it's hard to know which is best or best suited for this particular build....lol.

I have a 26 and love it. Shoots great. I have it for home defense but it's a little large to carry unless you're wearing a jacket. But if I need more than 15 9mm rounds then I'm really in the wrong place. I've found that Glocks bring quite a reaction from folks. They either love 'em or hate 'em.

Give some thought to carrying that 26 in a quality ankle holster. My two favorites are the Lou Alessi and the Galco ankle glove.

Those Sig 1911s are some of the best outside of the custom jobs IMO. Very smooth for a factory pistol. Little heavier, but good shooters.

it ran really good out of the box...

I oiled it down then put about 250 rounds thru it....no jams or issues.....it was the only .45 I took with us, so all 3 of us shot it

Picked up a couple of safes to lock my gun in the car when I go in places that won't allow them. Have to do that here in CA and make sure they are not loaded when they are not within your immediate possession

Yea I got this one from a local gun shop for $409 after tax. Gave it to father in law tonight and he really loved it. Said it was the best gift he's ever gotten haha

I caught it at 289 thanks to a friend so I couldn't pass it up.

I have a couple hundred bucks in gift cards at academy so I'll probably grab a G43 there.

Been looking at AR15 stripped receiver sets... Anyone have any info/opinions on polymer sets? I came across the Gen 2 American Tactical Omni Hybrid receiver sets. I wondered what the opinions on here might be...

I've been stuck on Anderson stripped lowers for some time. Can't beat the price and I've had excellent luck with them. They're just plain ole mil spec. I posted a link earlier where someone had them for $39.

I've looked at Anderson, too. I'm certainly not ruling them out; plus Anderson is a KY company. I have a buddy that owns an Anderson AR15 and he really likes it. I would like to get one that's coated in their RF-85 coating. If you haven't heard about that stuff you should check it out...Google or YouTube.

Great gift from your wife!!! I asked for a Lead Sled DFT, but got a North Face coat instead... My wife isn't as cool as yours!! Lol

Yes, Anderson's no lube rifles are pretty cool.

I wouldn't honestly. I have yet to see any kind of lower other than aluminum that's worth a hootie darn. Just seen too many broken right behind the pistol grip near the receiver extension. And if it breaks while you are shooting, you could get a face full of bolt or buffer and spring.

Stick to the aluminum. There's a reason no reputable manufacturer goes to polymer.

Yea, the concept is really cool, but I think you're probably right. It's just not worth the risk.

I have compared them, and the 42 is smaller and shorter, and so from a concealment perspective is a better buy. That said, I prefer the 9mm to the 380, just not sure how much. I'll probably go shoot both to see.

That said, my main problem now is I bought a bodyguard 380 for my wife and we hate the long trigger pull. Now I need to find a similar sized weapon with a positive safety. Any suggestions. She wants a small gun to carry loose in her purse.

Looked at both tonight in Academy
The 9mm was $70 dollars more than the .380 but Ammo for the 9MmM is significantly cheaper

Winchester white box 200 rds of ,380 was $71 bucks and the white box, 200 rfs of 9MM was $46 dollars

Oh damn that is a big difference in ammo price. I've been thinking about giving the G43 a shot.

Yea
If I get one it will definetly be the 9MM
Plus i know this is minor but the 9MM had and extended magazine, so your pinky could grip it, and it was more comfortable than the .380

There will always be a great debate over the .380 vs the 9mm. In years past, the fact the .380 came in smaller "pocket sized" pistols made it more attractive. However, most good manufacturers are now making 9mm in the same size, so you get a better round for CC work.

Given the choice, the 9mm will always be the better choice than the .380 for defensive purposes.

When purchasing for my wife, I had intentions of going with a 9mm. But after shooting both, the recoil of the 380 was more appealing. She liked the Bersa thunder 380+. It hold 15+1 so she can put quite a bit of lead down range.

I carry a .40 btw.
