It's really quiet, even though I'm sure it's different when you're there.

One question. Since this is a different/new technology. Will it still be under the same qualifications of a traditional suppressor? Similar to how a pistol ar, even though incredibly similar to an SBR, isn't an SBR.

I'm sure it will fall under the same guidelines, but it's a wishful thought.

Agree. Although it's good to see the technology evolving. I've always wanted a suppressor for my home defense carbine. I just don't care for the man looking at me, sniffing me, making sure I make their approval.

Curious about the process of registration. I know you pay the $200 for the sbr or the suppressor but how does it work? You purchase aND the ffl holds until paperwork clears? How long does the process take?

Yep. Make the purchase (usually at a class 3 dealer to make it simpler) fill out the forms and send a check to the government. If it is approved, you'll receive a special stamp for the paperwork and the item is released to you. The best way right now is to set it up under a trust so you don't have to submit finger prints and have the county Sherriff sign off on it. After July 8 you'll have to submit finger prints because of a new law going into effect.

he answered it above...I did the trust, and they told me it would take 5-6 months for the ATF to issue the tax stamp

Same thing with short barreled rifles, shotguns and machine guns. It's the ultimate hypocrisy. Feds can use whatever they want though....

How do you go about setting up a trust? Is the suppressor attached to a particular firearm? I assume the sbr is tied to the receiver on an AR platform.

For a trust you just need to find an online place that sells them, buy it, fill in the blanks properly, and have it notarized. The silencer is not tied to a particular firearm. One of the good things about the trust is that you can put a few other people on it, so should something happen to you then the trust legally allows one of the other people on the trust to take possession of it as long as they are adults legally able to have guns. Check out Silencer Shop for their trusts.

You still might have to jump through more hoops depending on what state you live in. The only way you should throw money down on a trust right now is if you know what you want and go purchase one at a store right now. If you have to order one, it will take at least 2 months to arrive to a FFL and only then can you start the process with the ATF, and at this point, that will take you past the start date of the new law going into effect regarding the purchasing of them.

What about the short barrel rifles? On an AR platform does the lower receiver carry the license?

Any recommendations on a moderately priced suppressor? Also, what if I want to convert an existing AR to a SBR? I thought I read that the silencer and/or short barreled rifle must be engraved with the licensee's name? How does this affect if you want to sell it?

If you have a dealer in your area, they will for sure have a recommendation on who to use for a trust. Several recommended 199 Gun Trust to me, then I went to a shop, that had a local attorney that would do it for a $100 bucks..So I went that route...

As far as the actual silencer there's a local store here, that is also producing there own suppersors, so I went that route. They were about 1/2 the price of the SilencerCo, they had on the shelf...

Thanks for all the info, guys. The only question left unanswered is the one about the short barreled rifle. What if want to convert a current AR to a SBR? How does one go about getting the stamp for that? Do you build it then take it to the FFL to hold pending approval?
