The Official #21 Tennessee vs. Vanderbilt Game Thread, 3:30 PM ET, SEC Network

Washington struggled today. Auburn looked competitive. Fsu looks beatable against the gators. Now ga tech looks competitive. What is the cfp committee doing? The teams that they back don't seem very good

I have serious concerns about Heupel. If you’re regressing in year 3 that’s a bad sign. And don’t give me recruiting classes, portal, blah blah blah. Every coach deals with that
That's just not true. Every coach isn't hired just one week prior to the start of the late signing period .... Nor does every coach take over a program whose administration has just publicly admitted to multiple Level 1 violations involving the previous staff. That's not the kind of dead end job that most coaches even want.

This was an ignorant post.

The job Heupel did in 2022 was phenomenal. Your "regressing in year 3" business seems to want to punish him for his much better than expected season a year ago? That's just asinine logic. Maybe he should have gone 8-5 last year, just in order to better serve your lame rationale? LOL.

Vanderbilt Game Notes

Vanderbilt has now joined Kentucky as the two teams that Tennessee has beaten 80 times in series history.

One problem for Auburn on that TD was their #10 playing on the back line of the end zone. Two receivers crossed in front of him including Bond and he didn’t cover either guy. Just stood there. And the guy who was covering Bond never turned around. Haven’t we had that discussion about our DB’s and their technique?
Bama’s QB put the pass exactly where it had to ne to be caught. He has become a very good QB.

Well, maybe we will see Nico next season. 8-4 is fine, except we got blown off the field in all four losses. I had no expectation of Nico getting significant playing time even being up as much as we were. It’s a mystery, but Heupel must have a plan. Whatever the plan was, it didn’t involve any meaningful playing time, bowl game included. Very disappointing. Good luck next year, Nico.

I don’t think we regressed. I think the roster is void of upper level talent. Maybe Heupel did a better coaching job than last season. Of course, the roster is his responsibility too. It needs a lot of work.
Still bare cupboard because of the Pruitt debacle plus the last two games looked like an episode of ER with all the injuries. Lots of young talent things are gonna be ok...

This year was a disappointment by coaches own words. That’s just the truth when you raise expectations. We are all thrilled with that. But you can’t ever rest in this league so if you bat above your average and get all the praise and contract bumps you better be ready for flack when you’re average.

It was a nice throw, but how often will a QB get 6 full seconds to drop back and pass, without having to scramble at all, and still not have anyone in his face when he releases the ball? I don't know about the wisdom behind that two man rush with a spy .... on 4th and goal from the 31. Freeze called a timeout to set up that defense as well. He seemed way too concerned that Millroe might reach the end zone on a QB draw ... from the 31 yard line though? Strange.

Per an ESPN scroll ..... Under Heupel the last 3 seasons, Tennessee has scored 45 points 17 times. That's the most 45+ point games in the FBS since 2021.
Heupel just needs an offense like last years and a defense like this years to be competitive in the playoff picture. People are scared bc we’ve had so many coaches we believed in that ended up being frauds. Our recruiting is significantly better than it’s been under anyone except maybe Kiffin and Fulmer in his glory days.

What is with Heupel's obsessive loyalty with his starting QB's ?
We only got Hooker last season when Joe was injured.
That is a red flag because it is indicative of Heupel's judgement.

Then he barely gives Nico playing time this year, which would have helped him going into next season.
Jury is still out on Heupel.
Heupel has our program in the best position it has been in almost 20 years and it is only going to get better. Wake up and appreciate from where we have come and where we are likely going. In addition, he has done this with a skeleton squad with limited scholarships. I am very thankful and appreciate what he has accomplished.
